  • Olympiad Fund - Challenge Week June 23-29 your donation will be doubled!!

    As you know, the CFC hired me to approach the corporate sector for sponsorship for our Olympiad teams. We've had to take a few steps first. Thanks to Vincent Chow, the CFC's web master, we've spruced up the CFC's web site. But the next step is the most important of all. We have to show the corporate sector that we support our own. Our target is $5,000 from 100 donors.

    So far, we only have around $2,500 from 18 donors (with another $1,400 pledged). How to get the rest of the way? Well, it's your turn. This is how your donation - even a small one - will count for maximum value.

    A SPECIAL CHALLENGE TO YOU

    Next week, from Monday, June 23 through Sunday, June 29, we're having a special challenge. Every donation (up to a total of $2,000) will be matched!! This is a very generous offer from a member of our Canadian Chess community. We are asking you to respond by donating $25 to support Canada at the 38th Chess Olympiad.

    Visit the CFC's web site at www.chess.ca/olympiad.htm. You can:

    - See a thermometer showing our fundraising target ($20,000) and amount raised so far ($2,265+);
    - Find a link to an alphabetical list of our donors (name only, not the amount donated);
    - Read a little about the history of Canada at the Olympiads;
    - See photos and profiles of our Olympiad team members.
    - Read Lawrence Day's Blog!

    While you are on-line, you can even make your donation:

    http://chess.ca/product.asp?PD1=4470

    The CFC also takes donations by cheque, phone and e-mail. So, put your cheque in the mail today, or call/e-mail the CFC next Monday-Friday, or donate on-line from June 23-29.

    Please, let's get behind our Olympiad Teams - CANADA's teams. Talk time is over - your donation is needed now.

    Thanks,

    David

    What does "additional $1400 pledged mean?" - pledged but not actually in the CFC's hands yet? Just curious...

    David - great work so far; all of us owe you a big thank you.

    My donation will be on Monday (can't help waiting for the doubling effect! - why not!?) :)

      Am I hallucinating, or did your post previously say "doubling cube"?

        You may or may not be hallucinating... another post elsewhere on this board mentioned the doubling cube, but David started a new thread with the doubling announcement and, well, ...

          Kerry,

          $1,400 pledged means the money will arrive but hasn't yet.

          $400: estimate of the donation from the proceeds from the sales to date of the Suttles books.

          $1,000: estimate of the cost of a donated airfare.

            Re: Olympiad Fund - Challenge Week June 23-29 your donation will be doubled!!

            Update for 1st day of challenge week.

            Total Olympic donations received $ 4,531.42
            Additional pledges $ 2,725.00

            Total on friday was $ 3,747.42, so we have raised $ 784.00 this week.
            Some generous cheques are en route, and are included in additional pledges.

            The donor list now has 31 names. We need to impress those corporate types, so every donation, even the smaller one, are important.

            A great start folks.

              Just a suggestion, you should update the website info, and put it back at the top of the main page so everyone visiting sees it.

                Please tell people who may not be on the web this week!

                Thanks to everyone who donated the past few days. There's lots of Canadian chess fans who come to this site to read and to post... now's the time to donate. I want to see your name on the Donor List!

                Whether you donate or not, please pass the word on. You probably know lots of other chess players, and they may not be on the web this week checking out ChessTalk or the CFC. Word of mouth is important.

                Thanks again,

                David

                P.S. Chris: Bob and I discussed this. Olympiad Fund is important, but so are the other upcoming events like CYCC and CO. The index links you see at the top were the solution. Everything's in date order, so it should be easy to follow.

                  Challenge to provinces

                  Thanks to everyone who donated during Challenge Week. You've come through very generously to meet the challenge! Airfare is about $1,000/player. I think we'll reach $10,000 in donations very soon, which would pay the airfare of all 10 team members.

                  A couple of reasons to keep spreading the word and to help us obtain as many donations as possible (remember, the goal is actually $20,000 - we're only half way!):

                  1. Number of donors: we have donations from about 50 people. I'd like to double that. We need to have and to show broad participation.

                  2. Number of provinces: we have donations from BC, AB, ON, QC, PEI, NL. We need donations from SK, MB, NB, and NS to have and to show broad participation.

                  Hint: we could achieve both of these goals if all of the CFC Governors donated! And, of course, the other Provincial Associations Bruce Harper and B.C.C.F. are challenging.

                  Thanks to CFC staff Bonnie, Vincent, and Bob for pitching in to help make all this happen so quickly.

                  David

                    As Bob Gillanders posted on the OLD board...

                    Goal: $20,000

                    Raised to date: $10,091.42

                    Additional pledges: $ 820.00

                    Great work everyone! Keep it coming! :)

                      We need an Olympiad Fund donation from Nova Scotia - we don't have one yet!

                      We need an Olympiad Fund donation from Nova Scotia - we don't have one yet! Thanks to everyone who has donated from the other 9 provinces. We are half-way towards the goal of raising the $20,000 cost of sending our Olympiad Teams.

                        David, was the full $2000 matched during the specified donation period?
