You have found me out. I wasn’t really interested in chess photos, but fishing about for information on the last round of the ’72 Canadian Championship.

        Old Chess Photographs

        October 27, 2017

On historian Olimpiu G. Urcan’s twitter site, three videos:

        https://twitter.com/OlimpiuUrcan

        1) The last round of the 1978 Chess Olympiad in Buenos Aires

        (Polugaevsky-Sosonko, Spassky-Timman, Romanischin-Donner, Matanovic-Sax, Korchnoi-Kavalek, Hug-Browne)

        2) William Lombardy lighting up a Cuban cigar during the USA vs Cuba match in the tenth round of the 1978 Chess Olympiad

        3) Scenes from the opening round of the 22nd Chess Olympiad (Haifa, Israel), 1976

(Byrne, Evans, Kavalek) – thought I saw Vranesic in a pink shirt but I am probably wrong!)

I believe Peter Biyiasas won board medals both at Buenos Aires and at Haifa.

Two games from the olimpbase.org entry on Buenos Aires:

The following games is described as “stunning and full of fireworks like one from the good, old 1900s”

Buenos Aires, ARG 2 Nov, 1978
        23 Olympiad final, Round 8
Day, Lawrence (CAN) – Morovic, Fernandez, Ivan (CHI)
        C34 King’s Gambit Accepted, Fischer Defence (4.d4)

        1.e4 e5 2.f4 exf4 3.Nf3 d6 4.d4 g5 5.h4 g4 6.Ng1 Bh6 7.Ne2 Qf6 8.Nbc3 c6 9.g3 f3 10.Nf4 Qe7 11.Kf2 Nd7 12.Bc4 b5 13.Bxb5 Bxf4 14.Bxf4 cxb5 15.Nxb5 Ngf6 16.Nxd6+ Kd8 17.Re1 Nh5 18.Nf5 Qb4 19.Bd6 Qxb2 20.Rb1 Qxa2 21.Qd2 Nhf6 22.Qc3 Rg8 23.Ra1 Qe6 24.d5 1-0

and this game is described with a "gutsy 22…g5! truly amazing counterattack concept":

Buenos Aires ARG, 26 Oct. 1978
        23rd Olympiad final, Round 2
Nickoloff, Bryon (CAN) – Ghinda, Mihail Viorel (ROM)
        D86 Grunfeld, Exchange

        1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 d5 4.cxd5 Nxd5 5.e4 Nxc3 6.bxc3 Bg7 7.Bc4 O-O 8.Ne2 Nc6 9.Be3 Na5 10.Bd3 c5 11.O-O b6 12.Qd2 Bb7 13.Bh6 e6 14.Bxg7 Kxg7 15.Qe3 Rc8 16.Rac1 Qe7 17.Ng3 Rfd8 18.f4 Qd6 19.f5 exf5 20.Qg5 Kh8 21.exf5 cxd4 22.Qh4 g5 23.Qxg5 dxc3 24.Be4 Qd4+ 25.Kh1 Rg8 26.Qf4 Rc4 27.Rfe1 c2 28.Qh6 Bxe4 29.Nxe4 Rc6 30.f6 Qd5 31.Qf4 Rc4 32.h4 Nc6 33.Qe3 Qh5 (White lost on time) 0-1

          198 photographs of chess autographs &c. arranged in panels 4 x 50.

As a Halloween feature, chess.com has photos of the 12 spookiest chess faces

            https://www.chess.com/article/view/spooky-chess-faces

The scariest is undoubtedly Alexander Grischuk. Would it surprise you to see that Zurab Azmaiparashvili is there too?

The women are scarier than the men!

I am indebted to Edward Winter’s column for referencing this very good portrait of Alexander Alekhine. It is from the Swedish Archives and supposedly shows him some time between 1925 and 1941.

Alekhine was born in 1892, so the photo could show him at an age between 33 and 49.
