                  Re: 2016 Canadian University Chess Championships January 9-10, 2016

                  The plan for the games collection from this event is to enter the games onto chess5.com.

                  Chief Arbiter Tyler Longo and I, Deputy Arbiter, will be sharing this work.

                  I've begun this process today, by inputting the following six games, which are now up on this website under 'Public Games'. They can be viewed there by anyone, regardless of whether one is a member of this website.

                  1) Lloyd Mai (Toronto A) vs Francesco Dunne (Ottawa), Rd. 3, 0-1, Two Knights' Defense, C55;
                  2) Keith MacKinnon (McGill A) vs Samuel Marin (Carleton), Rd. 2, 0-1, Philidor Defense, C41;
                  3) Francesco Dunne (Ottawa) vs Eilon Lavi (Waterloo A), Rd. 5, 1-0, Sicilian Dragon, B76;
                  4) Francesco Dunne (Ottawa) vs Simon Gladstone (Queen's A), Rd. 4, 0-1, French Tarrasch, C05;
                  5) Keith MacKinnon (McGill A) vs Lloyd Mai (Toronto A), Rd. 4, 1/2-1/2, Modern Defense, B06;
                  6) Christopher Pace (Brock) vs Alex Ferreira (Toronto C), Rd. 5, 1/2-1/2, Queen's Gambit Accepted, D24.

                  Watch this post for updates.

                  Thanks to everyone who contributed in making this a memorable, enjoyable event!! :)

                  Cheers,
                  Frank Dixon

                    Re: 2016 Canadian University Chess Championships January 9-10, 2016

                    Hello all,

                    It was a pleasure to attend and play at yet another edition of the Canadian University Chess Championship, and I'd like to share my perspective as a player representing University of Toronto.

                    The event ran very smoothly and the Queen's University Chess Club and team of organizers deserve an applause for their hard work, high standards and attention to detail. From setting up a booth on Friday night at the hotel, guiding arriving teams and collecting information on rosters as well as CFC fees and administrative information, to providing all equipment at a near-perfect site, all basis seemed covered. They had an excellent team of volunteers led by Simon Gladstone and Joshua Myers who worked tirelessly throughout the event (and evidently prior in preparations as well). I was even very surprised that they had non-chess-related volunteers providing water and coffee service on the first day, through advertising on a Queens University facebook group. Subway catered lunch was provided to all players on Saturday. Furthermore, it was clear that this championship was noticed locally, with opening speeches by the principal (dean?) of Queen's University, as well as local political dignitary. We were made to feel like we were a national championship.
                    The tournament had 24 teams representing 10 different schools, about 100 players total, which if I am not mistaken is a record for this competition.
                    Chief Arbiter Tyler Longo and Deputy Arbiter Frank Dixon made sure things ran smoothly.

                    The playing hall, in the John Deutsch (spelling?) Student Centre was overall a great site, save one flaw. It was in the heart of campus, affordable student pub in the same building, a student cafeteria centre in the next building, nearby washrooms, plenty of space, in reasonable walking distance to the hotel, and an ample skittles room. The lighting was sub-par and it became evident during Round 2 when the sun went down. Frank and Queen's Chess Club (as well as many others who jumped in to help) swiftly organized an entirely different room set-up, moving literally all tables and chairs to take best advantage of the existing light in the room, staying away from the darker areas. This was done in some 10-15 minutes between Rounds 2 and 3, making a significant difference for all following rounds.

                    Pub night (the real reason why some people attend this event) had a reasonable attendance. It's certainly challenging convincing everyone to go to the pub after 3 rounds of chess, but the troopers always make it! This "mansion" (I don't remember what it was called, but it's certainly popular among the locals) had 3 floors. Patrons were welcome to stay on the main floor and enjoy a sports-bar atmosphere, listen to live music on the second floor, or join the chess party in the attic. This quaint little space was booked just for the chess group, where several players enjoyed a drink, late night snack, and early morning hours silly chess variants.

                    The Canadian University Chess Championship is one of those rare events that is played in team format, and the camaraderie was often evident. It's simply great to meet people from different universities and talk chess and a variety of other topics.
                    The chess itself was also pretty fantastic from what I was able to see as a spectator, wild games where the gloves were clearly off. On three occasions that I recall, when the last game was delaying everything else, a crowd of spectators would gather to see the climax of the match, and a round of applause followed the hard fought game as players shook hands, a treat we seldom witness at other tournaments.
                    For many players this is one of their favourite tournaments. For others, especially in their university years, it's the only event they play in. And in addition this championship is arguably the one annual event that introduces several young-adults (but not real juniors) to rated, tournament chess every year. About a dozen players had this as their first ever tournament.

                    University of Toronto sent 5 teams (20 players), matching the host Queen's University. It simply worked out perfectly for us in that our classes only begin the Monday after this weekend, today as I am writing it. We were finally able to snatch the trophy from McGill University, who had won the competition for 3 straight years! We had two teams on the Championship Section, and three in the Reserves Section. Our A team (composed by Geordie Derraugh, Lloyd Mai, Mike Ivanov and Chris Knox) finished the event with 4 match wins and 1 draw, against Ottawa University. Mike Ivanov, with his intimidating flowery shirts and the occasional half-decent chess moves, discombobulated the opposition with a perfect 5/5 and the best board 3 medal. Chris Knox finished with 4.5/5 also winning the same medal for board 4, tenaciously drawing his last round after his opponent played a series of quality moves to take Chris' queen for a rook. Chris was however, after all material was traded off, able to defend the draw in a Q vs R endgame. James Fu (Toronto B) won best board 2 prize in the crown section with an impressive 4.5/5, including a grueling and exhausting Round 3 victory where his opponent seemingly had a fortress with B+R vs Q.

                    In the reserves section, Toronto C won the award for best team, also with 4 match wins and 1 draw against McGill C. This team included myself, John Venner, Sowjanya Sowrirajan and Seiji Nakagawa. John won the board 2 prize with a solid 4/5 score and Sowjanya was the team's MVP with a 4.5/5 score.
                    We fielded a team of all unrated players, Toronto E, and they performed very decently! We will see what ratings come out of their performances, but they all won some games, and didn't at all perform as beginners like it might have been expected. Welcome to the tournament scene Peter Vuong, Jonathan Moore, Bingran Wang and Jeffrey Qiu.
                    Finally, it was fantastic for us to have been able to bring with us 20 players, representing well all campus of St. George, Scarborough and Mississauga in a truly entire University of Toronto.

                    Awesome!

                              This makes a total of 33 games entered so far. I plan to continue working at the rate of 5 to 10 games per day, but there are some scoresheets which have been difficult to decipher, with missing moves, etc. I will need help from certain players to complete the database.

                              Cheers,
