      May 28, 2017 rapid

16 players weaved their way through the closed roads from the Ottawa Marathon and sat indoors for 3 hours of a beautivule day to play rapid chess. Armando Valdizon won with 4.5./5 after letting the lucky TD slip through his fingers in the last round.

I will not be running a rapid tournament at the RACC next week, June 4. The Club will be open for pickup games, and maybe someone else will organize something.

          2017.06.11 Kaiser Rapid

Beautiful summer weather = low turnout.

I experimented with the Kaiser pairing system as implemented by Sevilla 17.1.1.
It was easier than pairing by hand, but overall, not a success.

          Kaiser
The basic idea of Kaiser (discussed in previous posts) is to guarantee competitive pairings in every round in cases where standard Swiss pairings would not, and it attempts to do this by combining player ranking with game results to produce a weighted value for each win and draw.

          Sevilla Pro and Con

I've been using chess pairing software for only about 10 years, so it is possible that I made some mistakes using Sevilla. That caveat in play, here are a few thoughts:
          • Sevilla is freeware
          • Sevilla's window does not scale up for a modern resolution laptop and seems to have been designed for 640x480, so its print is teeny tiny.
          • Sevilla has more output options than SwissSys
          • Sevilla does not read the CFC database, so ratings etc have to be input by hand
          • Sevilla is simpler than SwissSys when trying to change pairings by hand.
          • Some of the "Kaiser" pairings seemed clearly right (e.g. in round 1, #1 played #2, #3 played #4 etc)
          • Some of the "Kaiser" pairings seemed clearly wrong (e.g. it gave a bye to player #2 in round 3, after he had won in round 1 (over #1) and lost in round 2 (to #3). This seems wrong because a) he didn't have the lowest (standard) score, b) he had played the toughest opponents, and so his 50% score should be worth more than the 50% score of other players who had played lower-ranked opponents.
          • The pairings were unpopular with several players, who did not want to get paired against the same opponents (I had Sevilla set to maximally pair any two opponents twice, but Sevilla might do this double pairing twice for a single player)
          • Some players came in late, and that might have fooled the program into making strange pairings, I don't know.

Because players objected to the pairings I changed the last round pairings by hand to avoid repairings.

This at least partially explains the ludicrous final-round pairings and the standings below.
The the first table is a standard Swiss style X-table. The table below shows the weighted scores....

14 players spent a beautiful afternoon looking for threats on chessboards. Armando Valdizon did it best, scoring 5/5.

Halldor Palsson will run the RACC Sunday rapid next weekend, and there will be NO RAPID August 13, as every player in the Ottawa valley will be playing in the Smiths Falls Open, or keeping their heads hung in shame.

                            It's good to see.

Matthew, Alwin and Oswin were all first-timers AFAIK, and Manni was there for just his second time.

FWIW, Alwin and Oswin didn't double forfeit in the last round, they played each other, but left without reporting their result.
I should remind players about that before the final round. :o

I just spoke to them. Oswin beat Alwin (if you care to rate the game anyway).

                                Thanks for the info TO.

Games aren't rated -- so no membership or rating fees required -- but I did update the crosstable.
