POKER TOURNAMENT at the TIME CAPSULE CAFE
    Tuesday, March 15 - 7 pm

Finally, poker at a site easily accessible to downtown Toronto. The TIME CAPSULE, just east of the Woodbine subway station, is a 12 minute trip from Bloor/Yonge station. The TIME CAPSULE is a spacious, well-lit games cafe at 2183 Danforth (just east of Woodbine).

Format: Players will be assigned to six-player tables by random draw. As players are eliminated, the remaining players will be moved to fill the remaining tables.
Entry fee: $25 of which $20 will go to make up the prize pool and $5 to purchase a food/drink coupon which can be used to pay for food and drinks.
Prizes: The prize pool will equal to $20 X No. of entries. The number of prizes will be one more than the number of initial tables. For example, with 3 starting tables, the four prizes will be ordered as follows>>>>
    1st place ............. 4 shares
    2nd place ............ 3 shares
    3rd place ............ 2 shares
    4th place ............ 1 shares
If the three starting tables are all filled, the 18 entries will generate a prize pool of $360 to be divided into 10 shares - each share worth $36. If we can get 30 entries making up five tables, then each player at the final table will win a prize.
Starting chips:Each player will be issued 3,000 starting chips.
Blinds: Blinds will start at 25/50 and increase every 15 minutes. The blinds schedule will be posted at the start of the tournament.
Dealer: The dealer button will be determined by random draw at the start of play and move clockwise at the start of each deal. Inexperienced players may pass the deal but not the button - thus a volunteer may deal in their place.
Other issues: Any other issues will be decided by consensus among the players at the start of play.
Please feel free to invite any poker friends to this event - simply forward this email to them.
Thanks & Good Luck - see you Tuesday!

Are you sure this is legal?

Re: Poker tournament - March 15

Montreal's main chess cafe had poker games (usually 10c/20c cash games) almost every night for 2 or 3 years until last fall with no legal problems. The management half-heartedly tried to enforce a $5 consumption minimum. The game moved a block away so that a few "troublemakers" could be kept out. The "new" locale is another cafe, but the game can be played out of site upstairs (after hours, the cafe door is locked and a thick curtain is drawn over the upstairs windows). Winnings/losses of $400-$500 by individuals in an evening are not rare (still at 10c/20c). A "rake" of $3 per player per session is charged (probably that is illegal).
