    100 years ago, the World Champion, Emanuel Lasker, played only 6 games of chess, a mini match against Siegbert Tarrasch, in which Lasker trounced his opponent 5.5 to 0.5. Lasker's primary challenger and future World Champion, Jose Raul Capablanca, played in only one tournament, the Rice Chess Club. This is detailed in a column by Dennis Monokroussos at World Chess.

    Im surprised there was any chess played. The world was in the midst of WW1, a big thing at the time.
