European Club Cup 2016, Novi Sad

    November 9, 2016

    Peter Doggers at chess.com:

Many chess stars gathered Sunday in the Serbian city of Novi Sad for the 32nd European Chess Club Cup and the 21st European Chess Club Cup for Women.

Novi Sad certainly is a chess-minded city. In 1990, while still part of Yugoslavia, it hosted the 29th chess olympiad. Gold was won by the Soviet Union, despite the absence of both Garry Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov—They were playing their fifth and last world championship match.

The team consisted of Vassily Ivanchuk, Boris Gelfand, Alexander Beliavsky, Leonid Yudasin and Evgeny Bareev. 26 years later, the top two boards of the Soviet Olympic team are back in Novi Sad. Ivanchuk is playing for seventh-seeded Ashdod from Ukraine, whereas Gelfand plays for the strong Italian club OR Padova, who are seeded third.

The top favorite in Novi Sad is Siberia, the reigning champions. They play with e. g. Vladimir Kramnik, Anish Giri, Alexander Grischuk, Evgeny Tomashevsky, and Li Chao. Second-seeded Alkaloid have six 2700+ players, one more than Siberia. Their top guns are Ding Liren, Dmitry Andreikin, Pavel Eljanov, Dmitry Jakovenko and Yu Yangyi.

Many more famous grandmasters are playing (although not all of them played in the first round), such as Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Levon Aronian (both Padova), Peter Svidler, Leinier Dominguez (both Mednyi Vsadnik), Pentala Harikrishna, (Ave Novy Bor), and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (VSK Sveti Nikolaj Srpski).

The tournament is already on and finishes Saturday (November 6 – 12). The 4th round was completed today.

It is impossible to cover more than a small part. We may confine ourselves to the games of our favorites – Vassily Ivanchuk, Alexander Morozevich and Anish Giri, if they do well!

All the results can be seen at:

Right now, however, they are talking about Richard Rapport’s 3rd round game as having the move of the year.

European Club Cup 2016, Novi Sad

    November 15, 2016

The seven rounds of the Cup tournament are over and the top five teams are Alkaloid, Mednyi Vsadnik, SHSM Legacy Square Moscow and Ashdod.

The best player on each board has Vassily Ivanchuk on first board. Evidently taking off the Olympiad to play in a checkers tournament rejuvenated Chucky.

    1. Board One – Vassily Ivanchuk (Ashdod) 78.6%
    2. Board Two - Gata Kamsky (Ladya Kazan) 85.7%
    3. Board Three - Yannick Pelletier (Schach. Zurich) 85.7%
    4. Board Four - Yu Yangyi (Alkaloid) 78.6%
    5. Board Five - Robert Markus (VSK Svetic) 78.6%
    6. Board Six - Michail Brodsky (Zhigull) 85.7%

Colin McGourty in chess24 sums up:

Vassily Ivanchuk was the surprise star of the 2016 European Club Cup, beating Maxime Vachier-Lagrave in the final round to claim the gold medal on the top board after playing every game and scoring 5.5/7. That was only good enough for 4th place for his team, with Ding Liren’s Alkaloid winning five matches then drawing all games in their last two to become European Champions by a point. Hou Yifan, meanwhile, combined individual and team glory – she won all six games she played, while Cercle d’Echecs Monte-Carlo won all seven matches to cruise to the women’s title.

From 2700Chess it appears that Svidler picked up 10.5 Elo points with his play, Ivanchuk 13.5 and Giri 3.7. These are Giri’s first wins since becoming a father. Peter after a short time had to fly to Hamburg to comment on Carlsen-Karjakin. Ivanchuk is in the top 20 again.
