Thanks for your kind words, Aris! It was a pleasure to have you playing.

I will leave it to Dan to post the detailed year-over-year statistics but here is the crucial fact: the 2017 edition of Kingston Open set a new attendance record. We have 31 active players - despite an overlap with two extremely strong tournaments in Ontario (Guelph, Aurora) and three in Québec (Transcontinental by the FQE, Printanier by Club Ahuntsic and Championnat scolaire de Montréal par équipe by Chess 'n Math). Our best wishes go to fellow organizers and arbiters; it is amazing for players in two biggest provinces to have such a rich choice in terms of formats and geography.

In Kingston, due to Dan Barlow's dedication and persistent effort, we are privileged to have friendly and welcoming athmosphere plus excellent playing conditions with copious ambient light, high ceilings, spacious playing hall and healthful air circulation. The tournament features players from three federations: Canada, USA and Germany. The EOCA luminaries really lead by example, as Aris Marghetis, Bill Doubleday, Garland Best and John Upper all play in Kingston Open this year. There is a healthy mix of juniors and experienced players ( welcome back from quasi-retirement, Frank Dixon! :) ), and of course, our only titled player, the incomparable WFM Svitlana Demchenko from Ottawa, sets the pace by having a perfect score after three rounds.

Stay tuned for an exciting finish on Sunday.

I've just posted today's results and the final crosstable.

A big thank-you to everyone who took part or helped with holding the tournament. Due to the selfless efforts of our gracious host Dan Barlow, $1,350 were distributed as prizes. Congratulations to the 2017 Kingston Open champion - WFM Svitlana Demchenko - and all of you who won category prizes, showed your personal best or simply enjoyed great time with fellow chess players.

Let's meet again in even bigger numbers in March 2018!

Congratulations to the RACC's Svitlana Demchemko WFM who fended off some serious opposition on her way to win the Kingston Open.

Re: 2017 Kingston Open Chess Tournament -updated

Every year before the tournament I get a bit nervous about how the tournament will turn out. Will the weather cooperate? Will the students be able to come? In spite of this we had a year over year attendance increase of 3.3%. In addition our female participation rose 50% to 3 from 2 last year. Daniel Xu was able to overcome his sneezes to take a way a cool $225 in Canadian currency. Billy Carroll and Hazel Guo were ranked 30 and 31 respectively, however finished 11th and 12th. Jake Van Rooy is showing that there is momentum in chess in the Kingston area. Svitlana was amazing, very professional. 40.7% of players received prizes. Thanks to Vadim for a thoughtful and thorough effort.
