    April 26, 2017

    Round Nine

Michael Kleinman comes in to discuss his game With Fiona. She says that he is having the tournament of his life.
Michael said that he had analyzed the Taimanov in Montreal with Aman. There was no pressure on him today as he had already qualified for his IM norm. It is his second norm, he got his first a long time ago.

Danny Rensch tweets in to ask if Michael remembers being beaten twice by him about six years ago. Danny says that if they played today he would lose.

Michael is asked if he has a coach and he says no, that he never expected to do as well as he had in this tournament when he started.

The producer said initially that Michael would get his GM norm if he beat a grandmaster rated over 2510 tomorrow. Then he came back and said on recalculation his opponent tomorrow has to have a rating of over 2380 and be a GM for Michael to get his GM norm.

Michael analyzes the opening and shows why he delayed castling, how he avoided the draw near the end and the nice finish. He said he didn’t realize that he would win until he had passed the time control.

        Reykjavik Open

        April 26, 2017

        Round Nine concluded

        From the official site:

Giri sole leader before last round

Anish Giri pulled ahead of the pack with a massive win over Baadur Jobava with the black pieces today. A great win for Giri who won his 2nd game in a row with the black pieces after falling half a point behind the leaders after round 7. A brilliant bounce back by the top seed who is in true pole position before the last round.

Of the six previous leaders, most of them drew each other but Jobava lost a step losing to Giri. Giri will be chased by a massive pack of 10 players on 7 points trying to catch up to Giri on 7,5.

There were some norms secured in this round as Aman Hambleton took his 2nd GM norm while Nishal Sarin and Michael Kleinman secured IM norms. Sarin already had all the required norms but for Kleinman it was his 2nd norm.

The last round will start at 11:00 local time and promises some exciting matchup. Giri has white against Erwin l’Ami looking to secure an outright tournament win while a big pack while try to catch up and move up the leaderboard.

Congratulations Aman! You are over the hump. The last GM norm should come much easier. Nice to see Peter Murray back in action after almost 30 years (classical tournament chess).

Congratulations to Aman. One more to go.

Most of the Canadians seemed to play well and scored performances above their ratings in most cases. Congratulations to all of you. Its nice to see Peter Murray playing again. I enjoyed his column in the London Free Press back in the day.

                      Re: Reykjavik Open 2017

What a great tournament for Canadians - 1 GM norm ( Aman H ) and 1 IM norm ( Michael K ) and especially for the juniors.

In CM Joshua Doknjas' case, he made it to the podium twice! After tiebreaks, CM Joshua Doknjas won two awards: 2nd Place U2200 and 2nd Place Top Junior at the Reykjavik Open 2017.

Some other results that aren't obvious:

Neil Doknjas gained 124 FIDE points; which should move him to being the 2nd highest FIDE rated U12 player in Canada. He just missed out on the Best Performance Compared to Own Rating top 3 awards (sliding to 5th after the last round).

Mark Plotkin came in 4th (one place just out of the money) and Jonathan Yu came in 7th in the U2200 section after tiebreaks. The top 3 had 6 pts as did Mark and Jonathan. In fact, going into the last round FM Michael Dougherty, FM Dale Haessel, Mark Plotkin, and Jonathan Yu all had chances for top 3 in the U2200 section.

Victor Plotkin came in 10th place in the U2400 section after tiebreaks, and had (I think) the same points of 6.5 as the top 3.

Among other things, John Doknjas drew two GMs and one IM, and beat a WIM.

We will be having another new GM and IM soon.

Congratulations and cheers for Canada Chess
