    Re: Canadian Chess Champion Trophy

Hi Thomas, welcome! To me, my use of 'home' for the CFC's current condition is that being one of direct control of property, in this case trophies. It's my understanding that the actual brick-and-mortar physical presence (office space & store here in Ottawa) was sold sometime back in the mid to late 1990's(?).

But aren't the NHL and the CFL trophies more about quantity rather than quality? I don't see the same level of character in either of those.

BTW, I had the great honor of hoisting the CFL cup up here in Ottawa 2004

Thanks for the heads up Larry.

Is it in Toronto or Montreal. It will be great to have it for this year.

Once the CFC got out of the book and equipment sales and everything became digital, the physical office was sold. The official mailing address of the CFC is typically a PO Box somewhere close to the Executive Director. He/she are paid a salary to manage the day to day CFC affairs. Any physical office space cost would be part of their salary.

Image comes from David Cohen's canadianchess.info

There's a large format photo of it over at the National Archives, it's really quite something! Besides the usual references to chess like the board and knight, it has several amazing references to Canada. Maple leaves around the lip, tree branches for handles with beavers at the top of each handle!

I think it is one of best trophies of all time!

The British Championship trophy is also quite good:

I suspect this is going to be a tough task, Neil.

The picture you posted was of Paul Vaitonis, who won in both 1951 and 1957. Maybe you know which year it is.

I would think someone who is "connected", probably in Toronto, might start asking some of the Champions (or even competitors) after that point, if they ever saw it. Maybe Vranesic would be a good place to start.

The Canadian Open trophy is at the FQE office in Montreal. Maybe someone in Montreal (or passing through) going to the Canadian Open this year could pick it up and take it to the tournament?

Thanks Fred, that makes entire sense to me, I am a big fan of working digitally/virtually. Just for clarity, when I posted an inquiry as to whether CFC maintains a physical office, I did not mean it in any way critically, it was only in respect of the prospect which the thread had raised of someone, white-gloved or otherwise, hopping in a van and driving to pick up various trophies only to realize belatedly that they cannot comfortably be deposited for safekeeping in CFC's post office box!

Not sure which year that photo was taken, Fred.

I'll keep in touch, hopefully my sleuthing around will unearths some leads.

There is a picture of 1951 championship players. It looks that Povilas have the same suit and tie, and he looks quite similar.

The picture found at http://www.pansy-paws.com/genealogy/...onship_old.htm what have more information and material related to the championship.
There is a new website but I could not load any pictures from there: http://www.pansy-paws.com/mcclelland...ampionship.php

This all rings a bell now, Stephen. I believe it was retired and given to Abe Yanofsky permanently after one of his victories in the 1960's. Being in play since at least 1904, perhaps there was no more room for names.

The base needs to be professionally lengthened/heightened to accommodate the updating for all our champion's names. This trophy is our trophy and as such is a crucial piece of Canadian heritage ...and our future too! It would be a shame to stop the clock on this magnificent trophy.

Stephen, thanks! I just knew this beauty had to alive somewhere.

I grabbed another link showing some details:
