  • Karpov vs. Nickoloff, 1979

I was perusing Chessgames.com this evening and I stumbled across the following win by Canada's own Bryon Nickoloff over the then World Champion Karpov:

I was wondering if anyone happened to know anything about this particular game?

Looks like it was some kind of exhibition game? Eaton Center (1979)?

This simul took place in the Toronto Eaton Centre on May 9, 1979 - two days after the Man and his World event finished in Montreal. Since I have no quick access to Toronto papers from around that time, I have no more details than that (CFC magazines have nothing).

Part of a twenty-game simul on May 9 in which Karpov scored +17 =2 -1. The game is annotated in Canadian Chess News, March 2013.

There was a big crowd at the north end of the Eaton Centre, south of the actual Eaton store, as the names of the lucky players were read out of a hat. But it turns out that Nick was a ringer as the organizer was mad at Karpov over charging his expenses. Likely Nick had prepared an opening. and I think that he may have just come back from Mexico for a visit.
