Is a FIDE rating required to participate? Or is it only preferred?

        Hello Alfred,

"Preferred" only. According to the FIDE rating regulations, in a Swiss event, "For rated players, only games against rated opponents are counted" and "For an unrated player’s first performance to count, he must score more than 0% against rated opponents." Thus, we would naturally like to offer people a better chance to have their games rated, hence a preference for those with established FIDE ratings. However, where did all those people initially come from? :D Everyone was playing unrated in her or his first-ever FIDE-tournament. We need to give the next wave of players a chance to "catch up".

Still-unrated players are very welcome to register, and if they manage to be paired against at least five rated opponents and to score at least 0.5, they would earn FIDE rating in just one tournament - hopefully, for the June FRL.

          Dear Chess Friends,

Once in a while, we have a chance to gather overwhelmingly, to make
a difference. This Saturday's event will give one extraordinarily hard-
working individual an invaluable opportunity to serve us all, by gaining
the much-coveted International Arbiter norm. Please come out in large
numbers to play this exciting blitz event, and help another Canadian arbit
for us on the world stage. His name is Vadim Tsypin (on right, with a friend:):

Are you sure that for a blitz tournament FIDE gives an IA norm? Should he get an FA title first too? (He is titled as an NA in the flyer)

            Unfortunately I can not come...

I am very grateful to Francis as the organizer and to all of you who registered / were about to / spread the word / sent supportive messages. Really appreciate it.
Organize event after Canadian Closed and you will get many registrations and advertise with time.

Thanks Andy! That is in the plans, too: a Blitz for the FQE on the morning of July 02, after the Canadian Closed. I already had a chance to mention this on the French side of the board, will definitely advertise massively here once the details are known and the flyer for the event is ready.
