  • looking for old proverb (not chess-related)

Hello there, I've spent a LONG time tonight looking for an old proverb, but Google has not been my friend! I believe it was Indian, although it may have been Chinese. The proverb is something along the lines of a snake (serpent? cobra?) and a bird (crane?) look at each other, and in that instant, they mutually decide who's predator and prey.

Does anyone perchance have a reference to the actual proverb (saying? maxim? quote?) - thanks and regards, Aris.

I know of a related African proverb:

Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed.
Every morning a lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death.
It doesn’t matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle: when the sun comes up, you’d better be running.

TBH I'm typically asleep when the sun comes up
