History to Be Made: Garry Kasparov Will Return to Competition Play

Legendary World Champion and 13TH World Champion in chess history, Garry Kasparov, will be competing in the Saint Louis Rapid and Blitz competition Aug. 14-19, 2017, which features six of the Grand Chess Tour players and four wildcard picks playing for a total prize fund of $150,000. The Saint Louis Rapid and Blitz competition is the fourth stop on the Grand Chess Tour.

Kasparov came to international fame as the youngest world chess champion in history in 1985 at the age of 22. He retired from professional chess in 2005 after a record 20 years as the world's top-ranked player, and now – 12 years post-career – he's coming back to the board in Saint Louis.

The Guardian and The Telegraph have picked up the story. From the former:

“Ready to see if I remember how to move the pieces! Will I be able to announce my re-retirement afterwards if not?!, ” Kasparov tweeted sardonically.

Kasparov left chess in 2005 for politics and founded an opposition movement called The Other Russia that accused President Vladimir Putin of returning the country to its dictatorial past. He became a powerful political voice and even tried to run against Putin in the 2008 Russian presidential election, leaving the country in 2013 and taking Croatian citizenship.

Sharp-worded criticism, such as likening Putin to Hitler, made him a target and he risked arrest after being accused of biting a police officer’s hand at a protest in 2012. The opposition news website he founded, Kasparov.ru, has been blocked in Russia since 2014.

How serious are FIDE bureaucrats? LOL

President of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) Kirsan Ilyumzhinov later informed TASS that the issue of Kasparov’s return to professional chess would be considered by the FIDE Ethics Commission. The former world chess champion was disqualified for two years for corruption and vote buying at the FIDE presidential elections in 2014.
