I would highly recommend simply editing the initial post in this thread for future updates (perhaps with a quick "see the main post in this thread for new updates" downthread as a notice...)

Re: 2017 Canadian Open Tournament Thread

I find it pretty weird that the main section of the Canadian "Open" features no one below 2000, but the Canadian "Closed" featured a 1600.

        Words, man. Tricky, tricky.

          6 day registration still open.

Online registrations for the 6 day Canadian Open will resume at 2pm today and on-site registrations will be accepted on Monday July 10 until 6pm.

Come join us in beautiful Sault Ste. Marie! This venue is fantastic. The guaranteed prize fund is one of the largest in Canadian Open history and lodging is very affordable.

This has been discussed to death, but, I have to say... IMO canadians and americans chess players don't seem to get it right when it comes to 'open' and 'closed'.

'Open' doesn't mean everyone can register. It just means the tournament is opened to people from elsewhere in the world. Think of it as the US Open for golf or tennis. Even if you're an american golf or tennis player, you can't come up 1h before the start of the event and register. Unlike our chess tournaments, these are serious competitions and they have a skill requirement. But if you're a top player from elsewhere, you can play. Long story short, you need to qualify based on skill, even if the event is named 'open'.

'Closed' mean that only people from a specific country or location can register. Other restrictions might apply, but at least you've got to be a citizen or local or whatever 'closed' refer to.

I have absolutely no problem with a Canadian Open tournament that has a rating restriction for the top section. A 1600 guy has no business in the top section of the Canadian Open, IMO.

Re: 2017 Canadian Open Tournament Thread

Is there anywhere a current crosstable for the various sections of the Canadian Open?
I don't see it on chess-results.com at all...

The main website (ssmchess.ca) offers some live games but the website
doesn't have pairings or more importantly, "results"

[please don't direct me to Facebook is all I ask]

I concur! I can't even follow Bob's BLOG because I refuse to have a Social Media presence.

Well, I have a social media presence of sorts, but I generally refuse to use Facebook.
There are several other more entertaining time sinks...
In the past, I enjoyed reading Bob(Armstrong)'s Cdn Open blog but I can understand why it might be easier for him to post it on FB.
I am surprised the Canadian Open is not (yet?) on chess-results.com ...

                              Hi Ken:

Thanks to the volunteer effort of Erik Malmsten, my blog is now posted on Chesstalk, under my introductory post.

So far Erik has re-posted here:

                              a. The "Preliminary Introduction" Blog (July 9), and
                              b. The Rd. 1 Blog (July 9).

                              Bob A

P.S. My Rd. 2 Blog was posted on Fb about 3:00 PM this afternoon, but no one has yet "copied/pasted" it here to Ct. Hopefully Erik intends to continue his assistant task while able, and if a blog does not appear, maybe another Ct Fb'er will fill in.
