Yu Yangyi vs Grischuk Match 2017

    from Mark Crowther:

    http://theweekinchess.com/chessnews/...huk-match-2017

The China-Russia Chess Grandmaster Summit is a four game match between Yu Yangyi and Grischuk in Jiayuguan 20th to 24th July 2017. If the match is tied there will be rapid and then blitz tie-breaks.

    Yu Yangyi-Grischuk Match 2017

    Grischuk, Alexander - Yu, Yangyi

    - A "friendly" means...no rating adjustments? They have dinner together afterwards

LOL - Grischuk and Yangyi deciding where to go to have dinner. That's a conversation I'd love to have overheard.

    A New Low

If you decide to present a chess event on ChessTalk, you run a risk of following a real stinker once in a while. You may recall we followed the Sharjah Tournament, which was criticized heavily for boring chess and quick draws.

Pavel Eljanov: Concerning chess content, it was one of the most boring tournaments I ever played with so many quick draws every round.

That being said, I thought that two evenly matched players Yu Yangyi and Alexander Grischuk having a match in which Alexander was presumably provided with an appearance fee and all expenses might be interesting – a chance for the younger player to prove himself against one of the giants of the game and showcase his talent.

    The second round game:

    Yu Yangyi – Grischuk, Alexander
    Round 2, July 21, 2017
    D78 Neo-Grunfeld

    1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.g3 c6 4.Bg2 d5 5.Nf3 Bg7 6.O-O O-O 7.b3 dxc4 8.bxc4 c5 9.Bb2 cxd4 10.Nxd4 Nc6 11.e3 Bd7 12.Nxc6 Bxc6 13.Bxc6 1/2-1/2

      Now, a rest day

My sense of the ridiculous has been stimulated by this statement from chess24 on the match, which has started with two draws of 24 and 13 moves:

The players may not yet need it, but Saturday 22 July is a rest day, before the final two classical games are played on Sunday and Monday. We're guaranteed action, though, since if the match ends in a tie the players will compete in two games of 25+10 rapid chess, then if needed two games of 5+3 blitz, and finally an Armageddon game where White has 6 minutes to Black's 5, but a draw counts as a win for Black. At stake is the $20,000 winner's prize, with $10,000 for the loser.

A rest day? And we are guaranteed action for the remainder of the match? Ah, if only I were a betting man!

        chessbomb kibitzers:

        - congrats to Grischuk
        - very good game by Alexander! Rd1-d5-a5-a6 is the famous ‘tremplin’ of Nimzovitch
        - today Grischuk plays like a monster
        - smooth win
        _________

The white rook seemed trapped on a6 for most of the game. The comment above about it being a ‘tremplin’, I have not heard before. I believe a tremplin is a springboard, so the rook there is poised to spring into action.

Can anyone offer a comment on tremplins?

          - another win for Grischuk coming up. Yu Yangyi tried to fight for a win but neglected his queenside in the process
          - only hope for him is to sneeze and move the queen to d1 hoping that Grischuk doesn’t notice
          - a bad day at the office for Yu Yangyi
          - congrats Grischuk
