    From Leon Watson:

Garry Kasparov's return to chess is "only a five-day hiatus" from his retirement, the game's legendary former world champion has insisted.

Ahead of his much-anticipated return to action on Monday, the 54-year-old "Beast of Baku" said he wanted to "manage expectations about my participation and my future chess activities".

The Grandmaster's appearance at the Saint Louis Rapid and Blitz tournament after 12 years in retirement has created a buzz in the chess community. Kasparov is one of four wildcard picks for the tournament and will be competing against some of the world's top players for a total prize fund of $150,000.

Among the stars he will take on are last year's world title challenger Sergey Karjakin and two top Americans, Hikaru Nakamura and Fabiano Caruana.

However, he will not face the current world's best, his former protégé Magnus Carlsen, who is in Saint Louis but not taking part in the rapid and blitz event.

Kasparov said: "I have no plans to play after this event. Saint Louis is a special place for me, and I'm glad to take advantage of this unique opportunity accorded me by the organizers and my friend Rex Sinquefield.

Saint Louis Rapid and Blitz 2017

        August 14, 2017

        Round One

Kasparov-Karjakin was very tense with Garry behind on time but it ended in a draw and then Kasparov got up and walked away.

Aronian played a game against David Navara, which the commentators said was worthy of gold coins showered on the table. There was a mate on the board.

Caruana had mates all over the place and suddenly was mated himself!

Saint Louis Rapid and Blitz 2017

          August 14, 2017

          Round Two

Garry is not managing his time well. At move 40, Hikaru has seven minutes more than him.

Some chat-room comments on this round:

          - Aronian’s bishop buried on a1 for most of the game
          - we are seeing the return of Kasparov and of Aronian in the same year
          - horrible opening by Nakamura
          - good strategy by Aronian dressing that way to scare his opponent
          - two very emotional players against each other
          - I would wear Aronian’s shirt to scare off a girl I no longer wanted to be with
          - Naka saves the game with b4
          - Caruana completely winning
          - David is jetlagged
          - Naka outplaying Kasparov in real chess now
          _________

Naka up three minutes on Garry in the ending. He may have missed the win. There was a magical draw. Garry has a big smile on his face as he talks to Naka. What an ending!

          Fabi beats David Navara.

Aronian trying to hold his position together and Nepo has three minutes on him in the ending.

              Round Three

Maurice says that Kasparov is playing “a bear sitting on your face” chess. Garry’s first two opponents were arguably the hardest he could come up against – Karjakin and Nakamura.

He also says that Caruana is playing the best chess today in spite of his loss to Le. Perhaps he is channeling Mikhail Tal who started tournaments slowly.

One kibitzer remarks that Kasparov retired as No. 1, not many have done that. Another answers that with

              Sergey resigns to Fabiano.

Garry has a post-game interview with Maurice. He was happy to have two whites today. He was worse with Karjakin but got the draw. In the second game Naka’s position was very dubious. It was then an equal position and Garry said he was mesmerized by his two bishops. He was totally lost and then he found the only move to get a draw.

In the third game he was tired and went with safe and solid. Unlike twenty years ago, he was happy with three draws.

Tomorrow he has black against Anand and Aronian and white against Nepo.

He was just about to tell Yasser why he went into a long think in his game with Karjakin when Maurice interrupted him about the ending of the game Le-Nakamura and Garry happily analyzes for the benefit of the audience. You gotta love this guy.

Nakamura had a heroic defence but then lost and gave a “walking handshake” to Le and went off stage.

Garry then resumed the analysis of his game with Sergey. Very enjoyable.

Jennifer says that they set a new record for Internet viewership on a Monday today.

Reminds me of the Fischer endgame, where he knew to attack the pawns from behind, because he had just read the analysis in a Russian magazine. So Kc3 draws, whereas Kd4 will lose.

Yasser: I much prefer Garry’s position but, at the same time, I prefer Levon’s clock.

An ending with Levon having about 3 minutes and Garry only having 20 seconds. There is a flurry of moves, with the commentators predicting a Kasparov win and suddenly it is a draw.

David Navara beats Sergey and Dominguez takes Le. Earlier Nepo and Anand have a draw so it is only Nakamura-Caruana to go and that ends in a draw in 92. Jennifer and Yasser won’t let it go and show missed wins for Caruana.

                        Round Five

The two lowest-rated players in the tourney are not just canon-fodder:

Le Quang Liem is a Vietnamese Grandmaster and competed for his nation in six Chess Olympiads. Quang Liem was the U14 World Youth Champion in 2005. He was also the 2013 World Blitz Champion. Quang Liem is currently the No. 1 ranked player in Vietnam.

He graduated in May of this year from Webster University in Missouri with two bachelor degrees in Science, Finance and Arts, Management.

He also received an honour from the Departments of Business and Management, and a recognition award from the Susan Polgar Institute for Chess Excellence Programme (SPICE) for his substantial contributions to SPICE in the 2013-2017 period.

Liem received a full scholarship for four years, valued at approximately US$35,000 per year, and was enrolled at the university in 2013. Earlier, he was a student of Saigon University.

Lenier Dominguez is a Cuban Grandmaster and was Cuban Chess Championship (2002, 2003, 2006, 2012). His best tournament result was Barcelona 2006, where he scored 8/9 and finished with a performance rating of 2932. On November 8, 2008 he won the World Blitz Championship 2008, held at Almaty in Kazakhstan. Then, in June 2013 he won the FIDE Grand Prix in Thessaloniki as a clear first in a field of twelve elite players.

                        Nepo has defeated Garry.

Le is about to win over Aronian. If he does he will have three wins – over Nakamura, Caruana and Aronian and have lost to Dominguez and Karjakin. No draws – a very decisive player.

Welcome to the 1995 World Championship with Anand and Kasparov. The two meet in Round Six.

Although stripped of his title by FIDE for holding his 1993 match with Short outside the world chess body's auspices, Kasparov was nevertheless widely considered the legitimate World Champion. The Professional Chess Association (PCA) created by Kasparov held a series of a series of candidate matches to choose an opponent for him. Viswanathan Anand succeeded in becoming the champion's opponent.

The 1995 PCA title match was played on the Observation Deck on the 107th floor of the World Trade Center in New York City. The prize fund was 1,500,000 US$, with 2/3 for the winner. Ten percent of the fund would to go to the PCA. In case of a tied match, Kasparov would retain the PCA title, but the prize would be split. The match was to last 20 games instead of the traditional 24, each game played at 40 moves in 2 hours, then 20 moves in 1 hour, followed by 30 minutes to complete the game. There were to be no timeouts and no adjournments.

The match started with eight straight draws (a record for the opening of a world championship match) until Anand drew first blood by winning game nine. This victory was not to be enjoyed for very long, as Kasparov then rebounded by dominantly winning four of the next five games.

After 18 games, with a final score of 10½ to 7½ Kasparov retained the PCA World Chess Champion title.

                          Round Six

Maurice said that he was commentating on the Kasparov-Anand Match in the World Trade Center in 1995. It started off with eight draws and then Anand won. He didn’t savour his victory long because Garry won four of the next five game. Here is Game 10:

Gazza supposedly blitzed off his first 22 moves, making no effort to conceal that it was all prepared. Anand stuck with the same Open Spanish line from game 6 and Kasparov, seconded by Kramnik, cracked it.

                          - You see fragments of greatness in Garry’s play but it’s just not all together
                          - winning famous Linares 9 times was enough to cement his greatness, let alone other achievements
                          - Linares was like Wimbledon in tennis, a premium event and Garry ruled there too
                          - Karpov is at the Marshall tonight, but it is for members only
                          - I hear the Karpov lesson at Marshall is sold out
                          - just like the old days, Vishy is way ahead on the clock
                          - Lasker said he knew many chess players but only one chess genius – Capa – that means something
                          - Aronian thinks Alekhine was the best ever
                          - Bogoljubov-Alekhine in 1922 was probably the greatest game ever played, incredible calculation by the great Alexander
                          - Vishy is just pushing GK into more time pressure
                          - liem may be the next wesley
                          - Nepo is the next Naka
                          - Wei Yi is the next Carlsen

                          Later: David loses on time

Garry and Vishy agree to a draw after 31 moves. The first draw of the round. They made sure they had played 30 moves and after shaking hands sat there like World War I veterans, talking about the past.

At the post-mortem Garry says that he hopes that he can sleep tonight after playing d7 against Nepo.

                          Caruana resigns to Lev Aronian.
