  • A petition has been started by the Association of Chess Professionals) ACP...

The Association of Chess Professionals has published a petition which protests against how Zurab Azmaiparashvili dealt with the Kovalyov dress code situation.

The ACP Board strongly condemns and protests the actions of Mr. Zurab Azmaiparashvili in his capacity as World Cup Organiser.

Bullying and threatening the player taking part in your event is unacceptable, doing it right before the game is even a bigger sin.

The dress-code policy in the tournament is vague, and it is not even clear if Grandmaster Anton Kovalyov has violated it - but that's not the point, as up to that moment, he was not even warned about any possible violation, wearing the very same attire in the previous rounds. And then, all of a sudden, he is threatened and insulted. No player can be treated this way and this is unacceptable. Grandmaster Kovalyov felt he got no choice but to leave the tournament, and we understand his decision.

Incidentally, Mr. Azmaiparashvili is not only the Organiser, but also the Chairman of the Appeals Committee. The Appeals Committee, that is the only body that can correct the actions of arbiters and organizers! This should not have happened, and we strongly blame FIDE for creating this conflict of interest.

We do not expect FIDE to act, and we do not believe they will do anything to remedy the situation. We address the global chess community and national federations.

Doesn't chess deserve better? Shall we swallow another bitter pill all again? Shall the players feel themselves like secondary creatures, accept these insults and obey? Isn't it the time to unite and take a STRONG stand? If you feel it's the time to change the situation drastically, please join our protest and sign this letter.

Some very impressive names on petition including legendary player Jan Timman. Not sure why some people would only use first name. We are up to 1244 signees, and the goal was 1000. I would hope to see 10,000 signatures.

Chess.com has an article by Mike Klein entitled ‘Key Players Respond to Kovalyov Incident’

              https://www.chess.com/news/view/key-...alyov-incident

The initial responses of the primary actors have not changed.

              A couple of comments:

              - I have for sale nice suits for chess tournaments, sizes "Zurab", "Anton", "Chuck", etc...top ten ELO have 50% discount...on sale till Monday...

              - What a silly imbroglio. Look at that Azmaiparashvili- his dress is equivalent to that of Kovalyov. If this is the standard of organisation in Georgia then the place should be avoided. I have no advice for Kovalyov but I do have some advice for Azmaiparashvili, and it is this: Say nothing, just shut up. Defending this only shows that you have the same lack of judgment when not under pressure as you do have in the heat of the moment.

              - This is so stupid. Who cares if he's wearing shorts? This is supposed to be about chess, not petty details like wearing long pants. If they want a dress code enforced, players should be made aware of this in advance, not right as they walk in before a match. I feel bad for Kovalyov. I hope he gets that wild card spot that the article mentions.

First, Anton won't get a wildcard spot in the upcoming candidates tournaments. That spot is reserved for someone rated 2725 or higher.

Secondly, if you're waiting for the FIDE to tell you how to dress for the most important event of the year, then you have a problem.

To the question of who cares about dressing in shorts, the answer is players from muslim countries. The standard of dressage in these countries does not allow decent men to show their legs.
