A message from the HOD Christina Tao:
The hotel is brand new, however, many facilities are not ready yet.

The most important thing is the Internet is not properly working and it is very hard for me to communicate. I have to go to Sheraton hotel lobby to use the Internet.
I placed the first pictures sent by Christina here. When things go back to normal, someone will post everything to the CFC FB page.

Information from the technical meeting, shared by the HOD with players, parents and the CFC. Some of those points are location-specific but, taken together, they give us back in Canada a useful view on the championship.

Re: Team Canada at the 2017 WYCC in Uruguay

Tuesday, September 19, Round 4: 8/16 for Team Canada. CM Rohan Talukdar (U-14 Open) and WFM Svitlana Demchenko (U14 Girls) - remain undefeated, with 3.5/4 points each. They will be playing on boards 3 and 4 in their sections tomorrow.

It is worth noting that Canadians were facing mostly higher-rated opponents so far, so there are significant FIDE rating gains for the team (+11, ~1, -4), up to 44 points so far. This is more or less typical at the WYCCs: our juniors are FIDE-underrated since the Canadian junior player pool mixes, at best, only with their U.S. counterparts, in the north-south direction, while there is only once-a-year chance to dip into European and South American pools. :)

Wednesday, September 20: a difficult day for Team Canada as our top players faced nine titled opponents, with rating gaps as high as 400 points. Round 5 result is 5.5/16 .

The first half of the tournament has completed. A really good team effort from Canadians. Our best wishes go to all 16 players, the HOD, coaches and parents. Recharge your batteries tomorrow, do a lot of sightseeing, and come out swinging!

                              Some observations:
                              • Svitlana and Rohan remain in top-10 in their respective categories. Four more players: Adam Gaisinsky, Emma He, Richard Chen, Hairan Liang - remain in top-20.
                              • Out of 385 players, only two managed to maintain a perfect score of 5/5: FM Batsuren Dambasuren (Mongolia) in U-14 Open and WIM Annie Wang (USA) in U-16 Girls. According to Swiss-Manager tournament files, both of them have performance rating in 2800-s. :p
                              • Five Canadian players have FIDE rating gains over 30 points. Emma He (U-14 Girls) picked up 50.40 points over five games. Bravo Emma!
                              • Speaking of separate rating pools and the wonders of k=40 :), there is a participant familiar to many Canadian juniors, Sophie Morris-Suzuki (USA) in U-16 Girls. Sophie has been a good but not exceptional player over the years (for instance, Canada's own Ellen Tao and Shi Yuan Tian placed much higher in the 2017 NAYCC). Well, in this WYCC, Sophie, with 4/5 points so far, nevertheless shows an eye-popping rating gain of 136.80 points. For instance, a draw with a Russian player rated 501 (!) points higher brought Sophie a wholesome 16.80 points since we was equal to 0.08.
