  • Survey re ONTARIO HIGH SCHOOL CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP 2018

The Organising Committee for 2018 is preparing a survey regarding plans.
In order to begin a preliminary collection of data,
your reply with your answers and comments to the following questions
    will be very helpful.

Please discuss this with your chess club.
One reply from each school will be helpful.
NOTE: OHSCC is open to Ontario students in all grades,
with the focus on grades 7 ("junior high") through 12.

Please post your reply to this thread, or email to chris.field@bell.net .

Thank you very much for your help.

    Chris Field.

    1. Dates: A) Fri Apr 27 - Sat Apr 28 OR B) Fri May 11 - Sat May 12

Advantages for B: university hall and residence may be
available - less costly for all than hotels
Disadvantages for B: Grade 12s in IB and AP courses may not be able to play

    2. FIDE Rating: A) the Championship section should be FIDE-rated
OR B) only CFC rating for all sections

Advantages for A: the top section of most major tournaments is
FIDE-rated. This may attract top-ranked players.
Disadvantages for A: FIDE-rated tournaments cannot have more than
2 rounds / day --> we would have to return to a 3-day format,
or run round 1 the night before the official opening.

    3. Format: A) return to 3-day format used until 2014:
OR B) keep the 2-day format

    3-day format: Day 1 rounds: 1 pm; 6 pm
    Day 2: Champ (if FIDE-rated) 9 am , 1:30 pm ;
    Int & Beg 9 am , 1:30 pm , 6 pm ;
Champ (if not FIDE-rated) same as Int & Beg
Day 3: last round 9 am ; Awards 2 pm

Advantages for A: Awards ceremony much earlier. Easier start at 1 pm.
    Only one long 3-round day.
Disadvantages for A: Extra day of accommodation for out-of-town players.
    Extra meals for all.
Advantages for B: Only 1 school day and 1 Saturday.
Disadvantages for B: Two very long days with 3 rounds.
    Early start on day 1.
    Awards ceremony late and rushed.

    4. Schedule for 3-day format: A) Thursday - Friday - Saturday
    OR B) Friday - Saturday - Sunday

Advantages for A: Teachers have only 1 non-school day.
Those with a Sunday obligation are accommodated.
Disadvantages for A: Teachers need 2 days coverage (supply teacher).
NOTE: I understand that, for example, OFSAA track & field championships
    use an A-type format.
However, students compete in selective events.
Both OFSAA and OHSCC are school competitions.
Perhaps they should both be played primarily on school days!

Re: Survey re ONTARIO HIGH SCHOOL CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP 2018

Further note: So far, April is beating May.
    BUT THERE ARE PROBLEMS:
As you know, Hal Bond has announced a Pro-Am for Apr28-29.
It also happens that, for students with IB courses, there is 1 IB exam on Apr 27.

If OHSCC has to be in April - and it looks as if it does, because so many students are taking IB or AP courses
which have exams in May - it will have to be early in the month.

The date will be announced asap.
