  • Canadian players at the 5e RIDEF

The 5th Rencontres Internationales des Échecs Francophones (RIDEF) take place in Yasmine Hammamet, Tunisia, on October 25 - November 05, 2017.

Three Canadian players are taking part: IM Jean Hébert (the official player for Canada), WIM Maïli-Jade Ouellet (the official player for Québec), and Bernard Labadie.

The main tournament is a nine-round Swiss which features 265 players from 23 federations that are members of the Association internationale des échecs francophones (AIDEF). Four rounds have been played so far.

Today, on the rest day, a satellite Rapid tournament took place. It featured 192 players, including two Canadians. Both our titled players showed excellent results:
    • the 15-year-old WIM Maïli-Jade Ouellet finished in 5th place,
    • the 60-year-old IM Jean Hébert finished in the 9th place.

Bravo Maïli and Jean, and good luck to our trio in the final stretch of the main event!

The rest day tournament was a rapid - not blitz - if I'm not mistaken.

You are correct, Hugh. Looking at the Web site, the time control is specified as "15'/end + 5" incr."

The blitz takes place on Saturday (Nov. 4) - after the 9th (last) round of "classical" chess.
