Re: 2018 Ontario Girls U-19 Championship: qualifier for the SPFGI and the CYCC - Feb

The 2018 Ontario U-19 Girls Championship serves as a provincial qualification tournament for the 15th Annual Susan Polgar Foundation Girls Invitational (SPFGI) in Saint-Louis, Missouri (late July 2018). At the same time, this event serves as a qualifier for the Canadian Youth Chess Championship (CYCC) that will take place in Qubec City on July 01-05, 2018. This is a unique opportunity for Ontario girls of all ages to qualify in a safe and secure environment and to boost their FIDE and CFC ratings ahead of the CYCC! Every girl who achieves at least the 50% score will qualify, upon approval by the Canadian Chess Federation (CFC).

The winner becomes the 2018 Ontario U-19 Girls Champion and the official Ontario representative for the SPFGI to whom the SPF grants free meals and accommodation on campus. From the organizers, the winner will receive a transportation grant of up to $500 to attend the SPFGI. Beautiful trophies for the Top-3 players. Additional special prizes for girls born in 2009 or after! That's right, a classy trophy and two medals await the top-3 finishers who are younger than nine years old as of January 01, 2018. It is like having their own section, at the same time reaping all benefits of playing in a FIDE-rated event and learning from strong role models. Isn't it great?! In addition, every girl who passes the 50% threshold will receive a personalized Certificate of Qualification for the 2018 CYCC in a corresponding age group.

We have twenty-six (26) pre-registrations already which make it the biggest all-girls event ever held in Ontario. This includes two highly rated WFMs but the most wonderful thing is that more than half of all players are girls younger than eleven and rated lower than 1000. This is the future of Ontario chess and of Canadian chess in general. Those girls will get FIDE-rated games, will earn invaluable experience, will get a real shot at qualifying for the CYCC by achieving a very reasonable 50% against opponents of a comparable strength, and will win their own special prize. Join them now. Register today!

Players of all ages and abilities have compelling reasons to register and play on February 24-25.

    - If you are a beginner girl, register for the Girls' Championship, come establish your FIDE rating, gain experience, enjoy the friendly girls-only atmosphere, learn from your role models, qualify for the CYCC and win one of the "Born in 2009 or later" prizes.

    - If you are a strong girl with an established track record, register for the Girls' Championship, come fight for the crown and a fabulous trip to St.Louis, qualify for the CYCC in the process.

    - If you are a boy or a girl who seeks to play among your age peers, register for the EMC CYCC Qualifier in your proper age category to qualify for the CYCC and establish your FIDE rating.

Thank you Andrei! The qualification tournament goes well and there is a lot of interest among the new generation of players and parents about Webster.

At the opening ceremony, we had a very special guest. WFM Rachel Tao came from University of Waterloo to pass the torch to a new wave of Ontario girls. Rachel treated us to an eloquent, moving, deeply personal speech on the role chess played in forming her character and helping her achieve success in so many areas. Her remarks inspired and motivated girls and boys alike, setting a new standard of excellence. On behalf of the organizers and the arbiters, I'd like to express our deep gratitude to Rachel, Christina and Ed for doing this.
