  • Hart House Summer Open - Report

    Hi everyone,

This past weekend's Summer Open at Hart House was a great success!
134 players came out to break our previous records, and made every section very competitive. The weather was beautiful in contrast to last year's heat wave. Apart from starting nearly one hour late on Friday night, this seems to have been our most smooth-ran tournament so far.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Bryan Lamb for a terrific job as always, who knows exactly what to do at every situation. Thanks are also in order to my colleagues who help set-up the tournament and assist on-site: Bill Kim, Leon Perelman, Stuart Brammall, Geordie Derraugh, Daniel Abrahams, Tyler Longo, Robert Roller, Kit Ng and Day Milman. A special thanks to our volunteer Claudio Sottile for the on-site assistance, to Omar Shah for donating some books as prizes and finally to John Brown for helping as an extra player to play against those with forced byes.
Lets not forget the Hart House Staff, in particular Dagny and Nigel who had to shift the lighting on a couple of occasions throughout the weekend.
    Truly a team effort!

Thank you all for coming out to our tournament, and hope everyone enjoyed it! The next event at Hart House will be in December, most likely to weekend before Christmas. However, there will be plenty of upcoming events around the Greater Toronto Area in the months to come:

    - Windsor July Swiss (July 18th)
    - London July Open (July 25th)
    - Canadian Amateur Championships (Kitchener - July 31 to August 3)
    - Hamilton Summer Open (August 22-23)
    - Toronto Labour Day at Macedonian Community Hall (September 5, 6, 7)
    - Thanksgiving Weekend Macedonian Community Hall (Toronto - October 10, 11, 12)
    - KW (Kitchener) Oktoberfest (October 16, 17, 18)
    - Chessca in Elora (dates TBA)

Several of the above events can be (or will be in the near future) found in detail at:

    Open Section

Congratulations to FM Igor Divljan, who came out alone on top with a very impressive 4.5/5 points, conceding only a half point to Artiom Samsonkin with the black pieces in Round 4. IM Samsonkin and IM Nikolay Noritsyn finished joint second and third with 4.0 points each.
Although most of the additional-to-advertised prize money went into the lower section, we added also a prize for the top player rated under 2300 in the top section. This was split by Arthur Calugar and Wajdy Shebetah, who ended with 3.5 each.

U1600 Section (including U1400 and UNR prizes)

This section was by far the biggest with 51 players, including everyone U1400. Given the massive turn-out, we increased the prize fund in the U1400 category.

Three players stood above the field. Ferdinand Cale won the U1600 section, Frank Wang took top spot in U1400 and Jose Jimwil Avila was the best unrated player. All finished with 4.5/5

Splitting 2nd and 3rd place in the U1600 category were juniors Mark Plotkin and Jackie Peng. In the U1400 category Shafkat Ali and Samir Hossain split 2nd and 3rd. The above four players all finished with 4.0/5.
The book prize was won by Steve Karpik, who finished alone with 3.5/5

Congratulations on another terrific Hart House tournament, Alex and Bryan!

Unfortunately, I could not make it this year.

        Cheers, Eric Van Dusen.

          Hi Alex,

I did not draw withe Casereno in the last round - he won that game.

Excellent tournament, lovely venue, well ran! Congrats to Brian, Alex and crew for a memorable event.

            Yes

I almost spoiled my whole tournament with the shortest ever loss in the first round against IM A.Samsonkin. Nevertheless, managed to get into the form after several dozen blitz games. The last round gave fortune to play with the GM in a very ding-dong game.

Players/chess-moms/chess-dads were entertained by wedding ceremonials in the inner garden.
