  • Recap of the 2018 Montreal Winter Chess Classic

I would like to thank you for participating in the 2018 Montreal Winter Chess Classic. A total of 57 players took part, including 14 in Training Camp.

In the Invitation section, FM Zong Yang Yu and FM Sai Krishna G V are joint winners with 5.5/7. Zong Yang Yu is the 2018 Montreal Winter Chess Classic champion on tie-break. With this great performance, Zong Yang Yu crosses 2400, one of the requirements for earning the IM title. He now needs two more IM norms to get the title. Sai Krishna G V, who recently moved from India to Montreal, will have a rating of 2390 after this tournament. He already has 4 IM norms, which means he is few rating points away from the IM title. CM Eugene Hua, 3rd place, almost crossed 2300. His post-tournament rating of 2298 puts him in excellent position for obtaining the FM title at his next tournament.

In the Open section, Tyler Tanaka dominated the field with 4.5/5. With a new FQE rating of 2150, he is in excellent position to aim at the NM title this year. Talal Abbas and Jia Zhe are in shared second place with 3.5/5.

In the U1800 section, it was all about the girls! In the final round, four girls were playing on the top two boards. Isabelle Wang and Michelle Hua (Eugene Hua’s sister) are the champions with 4.5/5.

In a 1200 section filled with kids, almost all attending the training camp, Sacha Ramamonjisoa had a perfect score of 5/5. Édouard Fernandez-Busto and Barron Jiyu Jiang are in shared second place with 3.5/5.

    Congratulations to all winners:
