Vincent Keymer wins the Grenke Open!

    April 2, 2018

Peter Leko, commentating at the Grenke Classic, mentioned that he is helping young German prodigy Vincent Keymer with tournament preparation.

Vincent was born 15 November 2004 and is thus 13-years-old.

The Open included over 100 titled players and over 900 participants in total. First prize is 15,000 euro.

    From the official site:

    http://grenkechessopen.de/de/

"Vincent Keymer wins the A Open with 8 points from 9 games. The great young German hope started as No. 100 in the seedings and left more than 50 grandmasters behind. Keymer qualified for the Grenke Chess Classic in 2019."

    Final position in Rapport-Keymer

    Chessbomb kibitzers comments on Rapport-Keymer:

    - I think Vincent has secured his GM norm
    - Actually f6 was the game winner
    - The winner gets an invitation for next years Grenke supertournament
    - What a game!
    - Just looked this guy up. He is like 13 years old and is about to win this thing to play the big boys next time
    - This young man has all the time for growing up to highest levels. That's really fantastic! Let him play draw here and he belongs to the top of Grenke 2018
    - Beating a 2700 would be a huge upset and a defining stepping-stone in his chess development
    - He is also a very talented musician ! amazing kid
    - He has wasted precious time on piano
    - Maybe his piano teacher thinks he is wasting time on chess
    - He has to see Bxh3
    - What an achievement if he wins.
    - Whoa, Vincent your first 2700+
    - Super GM scalps will follow
    - They will - he started beating GMs at the age of 10
    - Winning this open at 13! Good lord
    - And they say his piano playing is 2800 level
    - One of the most eye-catching performances I've seen

Leonard Barden on the EC Forum

"That was the most significant result of all today at Karlsruhe. Keymer scored the youngest IM norm ever at 10 years 3 months but also has a career as a musician. There's a Chessbase article where Kasparov met him and praised him very highly. Significant because it's a teenage megatalent from Western Europe as against the Russians, Americans, Indians and the Uzbek Abdusattorov. He was lucky in that both Rapport and his previous opponent spurned perpetual check, but still...."
