The true chess fiction is Through the Looking Glass by Carroll. The next, probably of lesser scale, is in Harry Potter books.

Just wondering, if Harry Potter books brought more young players into chess.

I read The Rookie by Stephen Moss last year when it came out and liked it a lot. He's a Brit and an average player who decided to try to get serious about his chess. In doing so, he takes a good look at the state of the game as it is played now. Well worth reading.
