The handwriting police will be investiating some players, and their scoresheets will be processed by our code-breaking department.

Maybe in the 70's, or maybe it was the early 80's I was playing correspondence chess with someone in Russia. We were trading postage stamps. He would send me Russian stamps and I would send him Canadian stamps, U.S. stamps and whatever else. Mostly current stamps easy and cheap for both of us to get hold of. The game went on for years. I had a hard time keeping up because it seemed Russia used to issue a stamp for every day of the year.

Sometimes the envelopes got quite thick. It contained the stamps and the move. The move was always numbers as we were using numerical notation. The thick ones used to come neatly slip across the top. A label would be put across the slit to reclose the envelope and it said in English "found damaged in the mail" or something along that line. I forget the exact wording. There was never anything missing.

I don't know if they were censored here or in Russia.
