Yes, Quebec and New Brunswick, as part of the math program, Defi Mathematique, for three grades in Elementary School.

French only. Mr. Lyons the author was preparing an English version, but I don't know what became of it.

    AFAIK

McGraw Hill bought the rights a number of years ago. An English version exists...although it has become hard to find... From what I understand, New Brunswick pulled out of Defi Maths a few years ago....I spoke to Robert Lyons about 6 months ago, he estimates that between 100,000 and 130,000 Canadian youngsters (Mostly Quebec) are using the program this year from Grades 1-6.

Don't forget that the program entered the market in 1984...there are not a lot of educational programs that exist 24 years later...governments are always changing their criteria...trying to improve things....

Is there inter-school tournaments between these schools with chess programs?

        P.S. what is RFI?

Hi Lawrence, Patrick McDonald has recently had meetings with the Ministry of Education in Ontario and they are interested in having chess in the curriculum.
You should email him directly to find out more.

The question of fiddling with good programs until they don't work anymore, is "On Topic" for a Canadian chess forum!
