Jeff Sarwer - Canadian world under-10 champion in 1986. See some videos from TV shows during his early years. Many of you may know him under another name.

    Hugh,

Thanks for posting that link - some very interesting material there!

You refer to possibly knowing him by another name. I see there has been some mixup with Jorge Zamora (now Jorge Sammour-Hasbun) in some quarters, but Jorge doesn't seem to be the reincarnated Jeff Sarwer (though he (Jorge) did also win the world under 10). Can you please reveal the deeper meaning underlying your mysterious statement?!

    Thanks,
    John

      Re: Jeff Sarwer videos

If you go through Jeff's web pages, you can read his "life story" and where/why he had to use an assumed name for his own protection. When he returned to Canada from Europe (1996), he had just turned 18 - and thus could not be under the governance of any child protection agencies. He kept the assumed name for some years after (he told me he "didn't want reporters hounding him") - the media still remembered his exploits from a few years prior. Several of us chessplayers knew (or figured out) the "secret" of his identity (and kept it a secret) - and I had lunch with him and his father a couple of times.

No - he's not Jorge - although they know each other well.

He almost got his IM title a few years ago - the story goes that he was winning the game he needed for the title - but was afraid that he would have to reveal his real name to qualify for the title, and he ended up losing the game.

Read some fairly recent comments from him at:

Look who finished 54th on Friday - representing Finland, and winner of 7,000 euros (but buy-in was 5,000+ euros):

(any idea who Manuel Bevand (France) is - in 8th place on Saturday?)

I love playing chess, always have, always will.
But you're apparently not familiar with the use of clocks...

Thanks for the link Hugh. It was really interesting to see that one of the most talented players in the world was Canadian.

I want Alexandre Lesiège in a similar list ASAP.

Ray Philips = Jeff Sarwer. Olivier is correct.

He and Alexandre Lesiège played in the WYCC in Romania in 1988. Ten years later when they saw each other next in a Montreal blitz tournament, the look on Alex's face was "Haven't I see that guy somewhere before?". Ray/Jeff wouldn't admit anything at the time.

Jeff/Ray has some games in one of my databases as "Ray Philipps." Included are wins over Pascal Charbonneau, Jeff Reeve, and Oleg Linskiy.
