17 players is close to a record turnout; though 5 came after rd1, so there were a lot of byes.

Armando Valdizon and Halldor Palsson won with 4/5, with HP winning their individual game to take bragging honours for the week.
Not sure why so many of the players are listed as Unrated when several of them definitely have rapid ratings.
FWIW, I used the active ratings from the latest CFC Database in SwissSys,

Same time next week: register at 1:15, round 1 at 1:30.

Re: Sunday Active at RA Chess Club

Something is out of whack. Last time out, I was classed as unrated and this time with my FIDE Elo of 1944. My active rating is mid-1700s. Not sure what is going on. In any event, thanks to John Upper, a good time was had by all---17(!) participants. Quiet Sundays are becoming the main event!

A good turnout, with two new players, was only partially spoiled by a "win" from the TD, who avoided the most troublesome opponents through the the timely use of forced byes.

16 players on a snowy Sunday in Ottawa. For the second week in a row, the TD showed zero sense of hospitality by finishing first, this time by winning all 5 games. Any and all comers will have a chance to stop this bad behaviour next Sunday.

Special mention to our youngest-ever player, Josh Gagnon: all of five (?) years!

            2017-02-12 RACC Rapid

Reports on the death of chess seem to be exaggerated, though not for lack of trying.

Case in point: 13 (fool)hardy players defied the 20-25 cm snowfall warning for the National Capital region and came out to play rapid at the RACC Feb 12, 2017.

No word on how many of them made it home... :(

Sadly, the result was the same as the last two weeks, as the TD was as welcoming as the North wind, winning all his games.

Another miserable attempt to find a new winner ended in failure as the TD's opponents gifted him such an assortment of overwhelmingly easy-to-win positions that even he couldn't not win.

(believe me: I've seen his recent games, and if he could have lost, he would have.)

Re: Sunday Active at RA Chess Club

18 players, including several regular-rated masters played in the Sunday rapid. They conspired on the perfect strategy to guarantee the end of the TD's 4 week reign of terror: have an odd number of players 3 of the 5 rounds, so the TD would sit out.

The result was a four-way tie for first, between: David Gordon, Armando Valdizon, Paul Beckwith, and Kamal Balazadeh.

16 players were not completely fooled by daylight savings time, and played on a cold but sunny day in Ottawa. Dusan Simic won convincingly with 4.5/5.

21 players on the first day that felt like Srping in Ottawa. Bill Doubleday (the oldest player) won with 4.5/5, and Daniel Xu (the second (?) youngest) was second with 4/5.

NO RAPID NEXT WEEKEND: April 16 is Easter.

NO RAPID April 30, as the Arnprior Open is that weekend:

A woeful turnout of only 12 -- two of whom left early -- marks the first time in 2017 that the number of players was lower than the number on the thermometer. Bill Doubleday won with 4.5/5.

A small but respectably-strong turnout of 18 (sort of) played chess and talked about the flooding.
Good news for Gatineau on Monday: rain expected to take a short break for.... snow!

14 of 16 players brought shame to their families by choosing to play chess rather than honour their mothers. The Mothers' Day RACC Rapid Tournament of Shame was won by the TD, who somehow did not get paired against either of the top seeds.

Reminder: NO RAPID NEXT SUNDAY, May 21. The Ontario Open will be at the RACC that weekend.
The RACC Sunday Rapid returns May 28.
