17 players, including FIVE first-timers, came out on a pre-eclipse Sunday. Svitlana Demchenko happily accepted all gifts :) and was the clear winner with 4.5/5.

NO RAPID NEXT SUNDAY, August 27. The RA Centre will be doing electrical repairs. The RACC Sunday rapid returns September 3.

Re: Sunday Active at RA Chess Club

Electrical repairs at the RA Centre were postponed, and a few people who didn't know anything of the scheduled repairs joined the regulars we could inform by email, and we had a 12-player Swiss.

Justin Gagnon and the TD tied for 1st with 4/5.

We expect to have another rapid September 3, but watch this space for announcements in case the repairs get rescheduled.

Re: Sunday Active at RA Chess Club

Thanks for the great offer Larry!

I checked with David G at SG, and he says the playing room there is so -- let's say "well stocked" --- that we'd probably be able to fit only 10 adult players. So, much as I am reluctant to turn down your generous gift certificate prize offer, I'd rather turn down prizes than turn away players.

Happily, I called the RA and they say there's noclear of the electrical closure this weekend; so that's where we'll be this Sunday.

                  Hi John,

I didn't realize you had responded to my post...Vadim Tyspin pointed it out to me earlier this week...we can make it work if ever you need space...in the past we organized active tournaments with 30 players in our basement. Basically our space is there to be used by chessplayers...if we can help in the future...contact me and we will move mountains :)...and some stock too :)

Again, thanks for your generous offer.

While I do not think we will be needing a space anytime soon, I do see a time in the not-too-distant future when some of our RACC stalwarts will be happy to use it as a "safe" place to play: an underground bunker where their old chess habits will be safe from the cruel refutations of the hoard of young chess monsters CnM has unleashed on Ottawa. :)

16 players on a surprisingly hot late September Ottawa Sunday resulted in a 3-way tie for 1st between Armando Valdizon, David Fei, and Christian Collins, who gets the bragging rights for having defeated them both.

Reminder: NO RACC RAPID SUNDAY OCTOBER 1: there is a three-day EOCA weekend tournament at the RA that weekend. The Sunday rapid returns Oct. 8.

About one third of the field are UNRs ..congrats!

Makes wonder how many UNRs drop by over the course of a year ...close to 150 I'd say?!

                              Not nearly.
The events are unrated, so players who enter as UR remain UR.

We could rate them, but then we'd have to charge CFC membership fees and rating fees, which would probably drive away people who aren't sure they want to play much tournament chess.

URs are people who are interested in chess, but do not play in CFC or FQE tournaments; the Sunday Rapids give them a chance to see what it's like.

For me, thhe interesting numbers would be:
                              • the ratio of people who convert from non-members to members vs those who continue to play only on Sundays.
                              • the ratio of Sunday players who quit chess soon after vs the first-time CFC/FQE tournament players who quit chess soon after.

                              • Thanksgiving 2017

12 players and 1 TD showed up to pay "thanks" to their chess addiction on a fine Sunday afternoon. Three players tied for first with 4/5, with the "late" David Fei taking bragging rights over Christian Collins who he beat in round 3, and the TD, who preferred to take full point byes rather than duke it out like a real tough guy.

RACC Sunday rapid continues next week, Oct 15, 2017. Please try to arrive before 1:20 pm.
