    2. 2nd or 3rd - IM norm.

    3. 65% (6 points) - FM title.

    4. 50% (4.5 points) - CM title.
Is there a playoff for one FM title, or do all the players with 6 points get one?

I wondered how many players have obtained fide titles from the Canadian Closed. In the modern era of Swiss events, there have been 44 players (19%) who have scored 6 and most already were titled. Trying to figure it out from David Cohen's research at www.canadianchess.info

    IM Titles from Canadian Closed
(3 players got the IM title for 6 pts in 1999:
    David Ross 1999
    Michael Schleifer 1999
    Thanh Nha Duong 1999

    Arthur Calugar 2011
    Eric Lawson 2004
Vicente Lee Jr. 2006 (6.5 points)
    Nikolay Noritsyn 2007
    Jonathan Tayar 2009
    Richard Wang 2012

    FM titles from Canadian Closed
    Aman Hambleton 2009
    David Herder 2002
    Louise Jiang 2009
    Nikita Gusev 2012
    Eric Lawson 2002
    Christian Stevens 2004

(In 1999 it looks like top players with 4.5 points got FM titles
    Nigel Fullbrook 1999
    Hans Jung 1999
    Marat Khassanov 1999
    Stephen Glinert 1999
    Ioan Crisan 1999

Others with 6/9 who haven't won the FM title (Lost playoff as only two awarded):
    Robert J. Gardner 2002
    Dale Haessel 2006
    Robert Patterson 2002
    Jeff Reeve 2002
    Sergei Sokourinski 2002

Gary, thank you for the kind words!

Things seem to be going well, and the continuing extending hospitality from the hotel continues to impress.

Our U2200 section will now probably be an odd number of players for the rest of the tournament, so we could really use a strong local player - you could get 6 free rated rounds!
If interested, please email/text me as soon as feasible. Round 4 pairings probably ready by 9pm-10pm.

Thanks, arismarghetis at rogers dot com

Congratulations to Joshua Doknjas for the best start ever for a number 18 seed! Win against GM Bareev and draw against IM Samsomkin. May you continue in that vein and get the IM title!

Yes, the DGT games should be broadcast live. My post was about getting all games "ChessBased" as soon as possible.

Barring a last-minute donation, we'll have the top 5 boards on DGT. John Upper will take care of publishing those games.

Then after that, EVERY OTHER BOARD in the room will have 2 carbon scoresheets, where the original must be turned in.

Now, we were going to try to enter as many games as possible, time permitting vs. other duties.

However, it looks like we've secured a scanner that will inhale scoresheets one after another.

So, what we're asking you is, if we scan scoresheets ASAP to you, would you be able to keep pumping them into Canbase?

If yes, please email me your email address, thanks, arismarghetis at rogers dot com

P.S. to potential late-joining players: the FINAL room request list is going in overnight Sunday (i.e. before 9am Monday)

Larry, thanks for the kind words! And yes, we would LOVE to have those books, Evgeny could autograph, etc. We'll have an energy-shots health-bars vendor there, and they could easily stack and sell them. I'll be driving through Toronto on the 17th, so maybe that would help logistics? Just please note that on the 17th, please call/text me vs. email, as I'll be driving all day starting in Indiana.

When it became a Swiss a 2100 rating floor was tried and had over 64 entries. And having so many weaker players affected the path to first place, as some leaders had much more easier pairings. Around 36 players with an average over 2300 is a good size for fair pairings.

There could be exceptions to the 2199 minimum for players who have IM/IWM titles, been over 2200 and recently dropped, or are donating big bucks to the event.

Kids on their way up will have motivation to get their ratings up to enter in the future.
Thank you Eric for taking the time to write about this. I can't tell you the number of higher-rated players who express appreciation when their section is protected from lower-rated players, whose inclusion entails multiple problematic twists, as you described in your post. I've actually had parents say to me this week "we must NEVER be paired down". How can that work for ALL OF US?!

Anyway, I'm ready to move up anyone who SHOULD be moved up, especially due to RECENT rating history. But otherwise, like I said before, we WILL protect EACH section's ELIGIBILITY!
