  • On board with Aris on this one. Using the COVID-19 crisis to score political points is the wrong idea for sure. Instead take ideas and actions on an individual basis and judge them by merit, regardless of party politics.

    Examples:

    1. One year ago you would not have found me in the Doug Ford camp. No way, even though I detested the provincial liberals. But in the past 6 weeks he has completely won me over. Why? Because he holds his government responsible, recognizes and agrees where they should be doing better, and is working closely and is supportive of the actions of the federal government. He is being anything but partisan.

    2. I believe the current Federal Government is also doing what they believe is best, and to a large extent I agree with their actions. Being who they are, they are throwing money around more than I think is necessary, but I get where they are coming from. We have seen the opposition at its best when it recognizes the government has gone way out of line and then both sides worked together to reach a compromise that was in fact much more reasonable. That is why we need to keep parliament running, even in these times. The government works better with checks and balances. And so far partisan behavior has been minimal (with the exception of certain individuals casting aspersions on Tam's loyalty).

So I find it easy to ignore errors like Ford's encouragement to travel during spring break, and the Federal Government's failure to bring in better quarantine measures on Canadian returning from abroad. At the time they were doing what they thought was best for Canadians, based on the information they had, and now they openly agree that in hindsight these were not the things to say or do. So before taking partisan swipes, think back to what you were thinking and saying about Covid-19 and now ask yourself "Would I have done the job much better, or would I have made my own mistakes?" For Canada's government, I honestly don't think I would had done better when it comes to taking action and communicating to the people. Maybe just different at some points, and more likely worse. As to the situation in the USA, I have to think differently, at least with regards to the White House press briefings. Things are being said there that simply appall me, and it's got nothing to do with republican versus democrat.

Not a bad 'idea' but what were the logistics? Did the Cuomo gov't research this carefully to determine which nursing homes actually had facilities that could accomodate a quarantine situation with seperate staff? Meanwhile, if the NYC hospitals needed relief/space, guess what? - school is out; lots of high school gymnasium space to house convalescing seniors and high school kitchens for food preparation!! (maybe they don't have cooking facilities in high schools anymore but no doubt there are caterers who'd be glad to have the work)
They had many places to put the sick people. They had the Javits Centre which is now closing after sitting largely empty.

Dumb people with dumb principles in mind, make dumb decisions.

In Ontario, they have decided in their infinite wisdom that we can only get one month of medication at a time. So if you have diabetes, high blood pressure and all the other ailments that make corona virus a death sentence lets expose you to other vulnerable people three times instead of the once every three months that was the practice before.

        +1
Speaks to the very nature of that person and his history of appalling conduct ...sigh.

Seems to me, and is my hope, Canada will become a stronger nation due to this current pandemic. We are an amazing country, full of talent and resources. Never again should find ourselves reliant or dependent upon other country for such basic needs ...as a N95 face mask, disposable gloves, and the like.

        Never again.

        That's my hope :))))

Hard to believe it's been 50 years. If memory serves there were never any felony convictions related to the 4 dead and 9 wounded protestors. Life goes on in the land of the free.

I believe your memory is correct. I've researched it a bit today. From what I gather, the National Guard were slowly moving up a hill (from which it's easier to "defend" against a rush of protesters coming upwards). A group of them (I don't recall the exact number) huddled for a bit of time, then continued up the hill a bit more, and then, in unison, all turned to the right to simultaneously open fire (I think it was for 13 seconds). From that description, I it doesn't seem they were ordered to fire, and it seems just that small group acted on their own. They didn't seem to be "panicking".

Of course, all of the above is my interpretation. In other words, it might be less than 100% true.

If I may add, some scientists are predicting an eventual worldwide 60% population infection rate. Hopefully, the current REAL infection rate (not enough testing yet) is closer to 60% than to 1%

                        • Look at this pandemic as a dry run for what those Wuhan labs were really working on which is a designer virus to wipe us all out. Covid 19 escaped out of stupidity, incompetence and malfeasance in the case of spread to the west and elsewhere but it is a good preparation for their future plans. It was also very successful in the short run. Hopefully it won't be in the long run.

We can add the several hundred thousand deaths to the tab for world communism or as they prefer to refer to themselves world socialism.

I don't remember there being so many ads in the past but the ads are more entertaining than the variety you get on television. Sometimes they are more entertaining than the youtube videos.

Reading into the subtext, it looks like youtube wants people to remove all the hair from the hairy parts.

In a nutshell, the Italian government has issued a thorough evaluation of activities restarting, and chess is way down their list, given inherent protection challenges with over-the-board.
