    In collaboration with the Chess ‘n Math Association and the Fédération québécoise des échecs



    A unique chance for juniors and adults alike to play eight (8) FIDE-rated games of Standard chess within a fortnight. Quebec juniors remain FIDE- and CFC-underrated compared to their counterparts in the USA and the rest of Canada. The appetite is insatiable for tournaments designed to address this rating gap and to position our young stars better for the national and international events. This new tournament from the Étoiles montantes / Quebec Young Stars / Wei Lai Zhi Xing series gives our juniors a chance to boost their FIDE ratings, to increase their CFC ratings ahead of the January 01 deadline for the lists of top-10 Canada-wide players who would qualify for the CYCC nationwide – and to win cash prizes. Adult players : Don’t shy away from the challenge! Come to increase (or to establish for the first time) your FIDE / CFC ratings, to test yourselves against the rising stars – and to win cash prizes.

    Format: Swiss system, eight (8) rounds. Generous bye policy: up to four (4) half-point byes available in Rounds 1 through 5 if requested before the start. Skip the first week-end completely, or skip early games on three days out of four. FIDE ratings as of Dec 01, 2017 are used for pairings. Players need to have valid FQE membership or purchase it before the start of the tournament.

    Time control: 90’/end + 30” incr. starting from move 1. Bring your own clock. Forfeit time is 30 min after the start of each round.

    When: December 09-10 and 16-17, 2017.
    Late registration Saturday, December 09 noon to 12:30 p.m.
    Rounds 1, 2 Saturday, December 09 @ 1 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
    Rounds 3, 4 Sunday, December 10 @ 11:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.
    Rounds 5, 6 Saturday, December 16 @ 1 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
    Rounds 7, 8 Sunday, December 17 @ 11:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.

        At present, the ratings of registered players run all the way from 875 to 2238. The roster includes such accomplished (and kid-friendly) adults as National Master Maroun Tomb and the best adult female player in Quebec Manon Léger. On the junior side, it is a real constellation, from CM Kevin Zhong and two Experts Tyler Tanaka and Francis Durette, to the very young but tenacious Alex Jikai Yan (9 y.o.) and Alexander R.Z. Chang (also 9 y.o.) to the illustrious girls Isabelle Wang and Rachel ZiHan Wang.

            Another up-and-coming junior just registered. We have three nine-year-olds and three ten-year-olds who have thrown their hats into the ring to compete with more experienced players. Bravo to youngsters and their parents!

                  Thank you Hugh for all the tireless work you do, and for explanations to young players on how to improve their scoresheets.

                  The tournament was a success again. Parents of the juniors and strong adults are equally satisifed. Thanks to everyone - especially to our doyen, Mr. Claude Duplessis, who was a role model for the youngsters for his love of chess and good sposrtsmanship.
