            U.S. Championships 2018

            April 27, 2018

            Round Nine

Two guys from the former Yugoslavia come in, who are the editors of American Chess Magazine - Josip Asik and Dusan Krunic.

Their first thoughts were for the layout and the paper and when they were settled, the writers and annotators. Next issue will be about the present U.S. Championships and Caruana's success in Berlin. In the Spring issue they said that they covered the rise of Annie Wang in the article The Crown Jewel: WIM Annie Wang by Yuanling Yuan.

Yasser said that he was an editor of a chess magazine for 12 years and he wants to know how they got Vassily Ivanchuk to write for them?

Asik and Krunic didn't give up the secret but said there is an Ivanchuk-annotated game in each issue. Well, not in the last because it came in late.

A phone caller asks who was the oldest player to play in the U.S. Championship? Yasser opines Samuel Reshevsky, Robert Byrne, Boris Gulko and possibly Pal Benko.

Later on, Mike Klein comes through with the answer - Anatoly Lein, who played in the U.S. Championship of 2005, when he was 74. That tourney was co-won by Nakamura and Stripunsky, each with 7/9.

                Re: US Championships 2018

Fab Fabi was lucky not to lose to Nakamura and is one half point back of Shankland. Wesley So is one point back with two rounds to go. These are the only two that have a chance to catch Sam Shankland for first.
