  • Golden Horseshoe Chess Championship - June 2-3, 2018

Hi Chess Players / Chess parents,

We have more than 130 players on board now.

Latest pre registration will be out this weekend.

Today is the last day for the regular price. Price goes up by $5 after May 1st which is today.

Thanks to ALL who have registered so far. We will try our best to host another good tournament after our Oakville Winter open.

We hope to be able to match our number of entries of Oakville ( 181 or 185 )

    Cheers for Chess in Canada.

About one month to go before we begin.

We have close to 150 players now with another GM signed up and a couple of strong juniors as well. We have about 20 players or more in the Championship section now. Updating the list later today.

The only section which is short of players right now is U2000 section. Good prize money in this section as well so don't miss it.

In our future tournaments, we may add another section ie Senior Age 55 and above. This is after we receive feedback from seniors. That will be 8 sections in a tournament.

We may also have mixed team prizes ( best score for male and female )

Stay tuned for our upcoming newsletter this weekend.

    Cheers

Bumping up and latest updates :

        1. I have updated the ratings and put the players in the right sections. Membership expiry date has been highlighted in YELLOW and hope you guys will renew your CFC membership before the tournament begins.

        2. If you would like to play up or take byes, please email to info@elevatemychess.com

        3. We have about 150 players as of now and 18 players in the top section. 2 GMs and 2 IMs and may other titled players (FMs/CMs and NMs ). This will be a great opportunity for you to play against them and hopefully snatch some points from them.

        4. Very disappointingly, we have only 10 players in the U2000 section. All other sections are adequately filled up.

        5. Parking is free.

        6. Guaranteed prize at $ 7,400 which is quite unheard in GTA tournaments except maybe Ontario Open.

        7. We are about 2 weeks away from the tournament commencement on June 2nd and 3rd. Late entry fee ends on May 25, 2018 after which ONSITE fee applies. If you are still contemplating about this tournament, we hope you will join and support our tournament. The tournament hall can fits in 250 players and we are 100 players short of the maximum capacity.

        8. Tournament venue can be easily access through 401 highway.

        https://www.sandmanhotels.com/locati...SAAEgJdyvD_BwE

        9. Lots of restaurant nearby.

        10. Latest pre-registered list with the updated ratings and correct section will be in our latest newsletter

        Cheers

Re: Golden Horseshoe Chess Championship - June 2-3, 2018

With last minute registrations last night ( almost 20 ), we have surpass 180 players and going to 190 now.

25 players in the top section with titled players about 2/3 of the players ( GM/IM/FM/NM and CM ).

Lots of promising juniors aiming for a shot against the top players.

We have more than 50 players in the lowest section ( U750 ) and quite a number of them are newcomers which reflects very well for Chess in Canada and also for CFC. Thanks to CCYC ( Markham ) as there are quite a lot of players from Markham. I hope they will keep improving and go the higher levels in the next tournament.

One week to go before tournament begins.

We have achieved our target of 180 players and hope to achieve a new high of 200 players.

We will keep improvising our tournaments to make it worthwhile for all to join and play.

The new list will be on our this coming newsletter and website on Sunday. Please check your status ( bye/play up/section etc ) as I have put the players to their section based on their latest rating. If you do not request play up, you may find that you may have drop to a lower section after this week CFC rating update.

Cheers for Chess in Golden Horseshoe area and Canada.

Is there an update to the expected prizes? The current one shows $7400 prize pool, and you have (as you say) nearly 200 entrants at about $100 each.

Good point that you have raised up. We have 180+ players at the moment. Half of them are in lower section ( U750/1000/1250 ) where the entry fee are $ 45 and $ 65 ( early bird ) and not $ 100 and no doubt the prize money for the lower section are lower as well.

We may increase the prize money depending on the final number of entries and also the total revenue BUT $ 7,400 is the minimum amount which we guarantee as prize money.

Please take note that it is not easy to host a tournament in a big hotel where the rent of the venue is much higher than other venue/tournaments. We are taking a big risk in running a good weekend tournament and hope all the participants/future participants understand our stand. Please do not think that we are making huge amount of money.

We ( EMC ) are here to elevate your chess experience to a higher and more comfortable level. The more support we receive from the chess community, the more we will give back to the chess community in the future in many ways.

For example, for the upcoming Kitchener Team tournament, we are sponsoring 4 teams ( all entry fee and lunch provided ) to play in the team tournament. This is just one of the example. Better prize money in future tournaments are of course is another form. We keep improvising and make it better for all chess players/parents.

By the way, have you sign up yet ? Thanks for your support if you have done so.

                          Cheers

Gary you are doing a great job!

The costs to run an event are huge! If I wanted to make money...I would sell hot dogs at the corner of Yonge and Bloor :)

You are doing a great job!

When we do our Ontario Chess Challenge in Mississauga we pay about $15,000 for the site for the day...people have no idea of the costs involved...I understand that this is not their problem :).

At the end of the day, we are all benefitting from your implication!

                            Congrats!

                              Hi Larry,

Thanks for your kind words. I always look up on Chess n Math in organizing tournaments. OCC and CCC and few other tournaments which I had attended are of great quality and most certainly worth every cents to play in. I certainly strive to match what Chess n Math has been doing all these years. Without Chess n Math in Canada, chess in Canada would be different today. Cheers

On another note, registration keeps coming in and we just received an entry from Ottawa - a rising junior and a very likable one. Thanks for coming all the way to play in our tournament. We are closing in on 190 players at the moment.

We are setting up table and chairs for 220 players at the ball room which can easily fit in 250-300 players. Probably there will be a partition for the lower 3 sections and the 4 upper sections ( Half each ).

Help us to achieve 200 players which is 10% more than our Oakville Open numbers.

                              Cheers for Chess in Canada
