  • Simul by GM BATOR SAMBUEV at Ahuntsic

The 2010 season of Le club d’échecs Ahuntsic www.echecsahuntsic.com is now over.

We are extremely pleased to announce that will re-open in 2011 on Saturday 8 with a simultaneous exhibition to be given by GM Bator Sambuev.

Currently Quebec Champion, equal first in the last Montreal Open Championship, Mr. Sambuev has recently changed his FIDE affiliation to represent Canada. Making no secret of his desire to become the next Canadian champion, he is, in the eyes of many, the top active Grandmaster in the nation.

Chess fans, this is an invitation to come to our club and watch the simul or experience the thrill of facing a combative and creative Grandmaster over the board !

We are located in the gymnasium of Sts-Martyrs-Canadiens school at 9930 Parthenais in Montréal. Street parking is easily found just outside the building. Coming by public transit ? Then find the best route at http://www2.stm.info/taz/index.php.

Date : Saturday, January 8 - we open at 11h30.
    Simul starts at : 13h00.
    Entry fee : $10.
Event limited to 50 opponents. Don’t risk being disappointed, send an early e-mail and reserve your spot at info@echecsahuntsic.com.

    Next Canadian Closed Champion??

I wouldn't count GM Bluvshtein and GM Roussel-Roozmon quite out yet, when considering the next Can. Champion ! I think the top player is still uncertain, though clearly Bator has it by rating at the moment!

Remember that Bator has been active in Canada, and increasing his rating, while Mark has been playing little in Canada, and a lot internationally. So his CFC rating has remained relatively flat, where I think it also would be definitely rising if he were as active as Bator. There is also the wildcard of our current Canadian Champion, IM Jean Hebert, who has shown the capacity to play above his rating when he is on form.

Lastly some outsiders are the GTA triumverate of IM Gerzhoy, IM Samsonkin and IM Noritsyn ( past Canadian Champion ).

Bob, it is not my intention to disparage other masters in the country.

All masters have their fans, and fans are known for their enthusiasm.

Mr. Sambuev certainly knows that he will eventually have to prove his real status over the board and against the top Canadian opposition.

Re : Simul by GM BATOR SAMBUEV at Ahuntsic

          SAMBUEV 45½ vs Club d’échecs Ahuntsic ½

He turned round and round for five and a half hours. In the end, tired but unbowed, Bator Sambuev signed an impressive performance of 45 wins out of 46 games during a memorable simul at the Ahuntsic Chess Club on January 8, 2011.
Qiyou Wu was the only one squeezing a draw out of him (see picture).
Yet for a long while the master courted disaster against Jean-Marc Médawar. « Unfortunately I blundered a piece in the opening », he admitted after everything was over. Like a groggy boxer hanging on to his opponent to survive after a vicious punch, he complicated the position. He was, at that point, just hoping to stay alive. And then, as black kings all around were being killed, the master gradually began to come back faster and faster to Jean-Marc, who eventually crumbled under the pressure. The piece was eventually regained and next an exchange forced another resignation. An excruciating victory for White and an honorable defeat for Jean-Marc. Hail to Bator Sambuev for this tenacious recovery and a nearly perfect score !
