  • A Tom O'Donnell game from the 1980's...

Maybe Tom could give us the story behind this game. I am entering the game from the scanned scoresheets, and no result is given at the end. I assume they agreed to a draw just because the two 80-move scoresheets were full (the crosstable shows it as a draw). An impatient TD could have declared it a draw at move 154 - or an even more impatient TD could have declared it a draw after move 56.

There is no indication of time used, or whether it was adjourned.

Re: A Tom O'Donnell game from the 1980's...

I think that game is from the Canadian Junior, won by Doug Bailey, if I recall correctly. I had started with something like 5-1, tied for first with Doug, then lost our individual encounter. I always lost to Doug when we were juniors. I finished with something like 6.5-4.5. Anyway, Glyn and I were waiting for something (some other game to finish, I think) and with nothing better to do we manoeuvred our knights around randomly, with the idea that we would break the record for longest game in a Junior. I think the last 100 moves took about 15 minutes to complete. Glyn seemed like a nice guy, was very quiet, and had an accent. I think he was from South Africa. It has been 25 years so I might be a bit sketchy on the details. The TD/organizer was ... David Lavin!

If you have the game with Rob Gardner from that event, you will probably find it funny. I played into a line that was known to be pretty much a forced loss. That was pretty typical of my play even back then. ;-)

Another scoresheet turned up which had the remaining 45 moves of this titanic struggle, and the comment "Draw agreed" written on it.

So here is the complete game:
