  • World Youth set to begin at 4 a.m. tomorrow

Assuming I figured this out correctly, the World Youth begins in Vung Tau, Vietnam at 3 p.m. on October 20th their time...which I believe makes it 4 a.m. our time.

Good luck to the Canadian contingent!

You can follow the event at the link below....

Team Canada scores 10.5 out of 24 in round 1

I really like the web site for this event. Extremely easy to follow how your favorite player and or country is doing.

Eric Hansen paired with Canadian Alexander Martchenko in round 1 and paired with Canadian Lloyd May in round 2. Why is this allowed?

Yeah it sucks... I emailed them before the tournament since it was likely I would be paired with Martchenko. They didn't reply to my email so I still wasn't sure. It's my first WYCC so im not all familiar with how things work. Oh well, what can i do.

This is an individual tournament, and it happend before that one of the canadian players to be paired twice with other canadian players (the first that I remember is in France when Vlad Gaciu(BC) played against Noam Davies (BC) and Victor Kaminski (AB)

It also happened in Turkey last year. It's just the "luck of the draw". You probably will see a lot of Vietnamese players being paired together as well; as it would seem that the host country is allowed to have a comparably larger number of participants than other countries (there were many matches where Turkish players played against Turkish players).

                Hi Wilf,

There is no doubt that it would be possible and desirable to prevent youngsters from the same country to play each other in the first 3 rounds. It just takes someone to make the point. For FIDE this event is a great cash cow...but other than that...they simply want things to run smoothly and that they don't have to think about it.

I am sure a rule like this would receive zero resistance if the right people talk to...the right people...maybe Hal can mention it to some FIDE stuffed shirts :)

At least that is how I read the web site. No perfect scores left for Canada. Shiyam has 1.5 out of 2.

                    Hi Larry,

I checked the schedule, round 2 hasn't been played yet. It starts
tomorrow morning at 4 am Toronto time like you said for round 1.:)

                      Hi Larry:

Shiyam lost in Rd. 1 to Bao Nghia Dong ( Vietnam - 2019 ) [ hope I got the name in the right order ].

In Rd. 2 he plays Das Debashis ( India - 2309 ), who has 1/2 pt..

                        Ahhh...okay now I understand....

                        Thanks Wilf!

This is what I found on the website:

FM Thavandiran Shiyam 2338 CAN Pts. 0,0
                        1 49 Dong Bao Nghia 2019 VIE 1,0 s
                        2 15 Debashis Das 2309 IND 0,5 s

and with how you explained it, it now makes sense :)
