  • Ontario Open Results

The Ontario Open (aka KW Oktoberfest) was very competitive this year. In the Open section 12 masters and former masters played. IM Artem Samsonkin dominated with 4.5 to take clear first. Liam Henry precisely held a long draw against IM Brian Hartman (nice to see your return to the Kitchener area Brian!) to share second at 3.5 with Victor Plotkin. The under 2000 was a real scrap with a 5 way tie for first at 3.5! Alex Ferreira with a draw offer overlooked a transposition to a winning king and pawn endgame against Jesse Wang which enabled Jesse, Jordan Palmer, Michael Prysiazny, and Omar Shah to tie for first. In the under 1700 Kevin Schwarzer used inspiration from his new girlfriend to tie for first with Mark Plotkin and Jonathan Farine, all at 4. In the under 1400 Joey Befurt in deciding to turn his life around has taken up tournament chess and became a winner in this tournament sharing first at 4 with two other resourceful players, John Maclean and Tyler Ensor. The teams concept proved very popular with 9 teams! Team CMA (Larry's boys) finished 1st - Liam Henry, Omar Shah, Jonathan Farine, and Nick Gellner. Organizers received lots of compliments, there was a spirit of chess camaraderie, and no disputes!

Ooops - correction. In the under 1400 the winning score was 3.5 and a 3 way tie. Obviously I was processing too much information.
