Re: GM Eric Hansen tied for 1st!

Eric just tweeted that he had won his round 6 game after his opponent blundered a piece to speed along the process... The live feed must be delayed because after reading the tweet, I watched the end of the game "live". Houdini* considered Eric's winning move 'suboptimal' - LOL

*I presume Houdini is doing the eval at Chessbomb

They are both right. Eric's move was good enough to pocket an easy point. Go, Eric, Go!

GM Hansen is still tied for first after six rounds at Capelle la Grande. There are 20 players at 5/6. :)

He will play Black on board 2 tomorrow, in round 7, against GM Sergey Fedorchuk (2643).

Good luck and good skill, Eric!! :)

I wonder what the story is on L. Jarmula? Born in '98 - he must be seriously underrated. Where's that Ed Seedhouse when he's needed? : )

Re: GM Eric Hansen tied for 1st!

GM Eric Hansen lost today at Capelle to GM Fedorchuk, as Black in a Lion, in 39 moves.

This line runs 1.e4 d6 2.d4 Nf6 3.Nc3 e5 etc. It's a form of Philidor Defence, with a different move order. Developed mainly in the Netherlands in recent times, although similar positions date back over 100 years.

The loss drops him out of a tie for first place.

Eric didn't manage to generate any serious counterplay, in the face of GM Fedorchuk's precise play. Eric lost a pawn in the middlegame, found himself in a passive position with Q+R+R on each side, and was ground down.

With such a large field, over 500 players, this loss unfortunately takes him out of contention for first place, although he can still end up very high in the standings, with a strong finish.

What a final round game (ongoing) as Black vs. GM Vorobiov [2584]. Eric's clutch performances are pretty amazing to watch. With a win he will share first place with great tiebreaks!
