  • 2013 New York State Championship

25 youngsters from the Montreal region made the trip down to Saratoga Springs last weekend in a bus rented by the Chess'n Math Association.

They had a great time...and 7 players came home with trophies!

This included a 1st place result in the elementary school division by Mali-Jade Ouellet! and a 4th place in the primary championship by Shawn Rodrigue-Lemieux!.

Thanks to Alexandre Ber and Thierry Libersan for chaperoning the group on behalf of the Chess'n Math Association

You can view the crosstables by following the links below:

I only count 7 players (in all sections) with "PQ" or "QC" beside their names. Is it possible some were mis-labelled, or are you missing any crosstables?

I see a couple of players with "NY" instead of "QC" (Run Kun Fan, Ananda Saha, Zachary Saine, Catherine Gao...)

I recognize the names of the 3rd and 4th players, James Black 2298 and Justus Williams 2316, from the documentary Brooklyn Castle. These talented players were helped by a great in-class chess program before high school. Does Montreal have any program to help the strongest players become masters?

Chess and Math does a great job at reaching lots of young chess players, very often directly in their classes. It also organizes lots of tournaments in Montreal.

Once they reach a certain level, promising chess players can participate in strong tournaments organized by the FQE. The FQE has a youth chess fund, thanks to some sponsors (including Pepsico), that is used to organize the Quebec Junior Championship (first prize of $1500) and the Quebec Youth Championship. The latter qualifies players for Team-Quebec.
Team-Quebec, also sponsored by Pepsico (and last year sponsored by CMA), offers lessons with 3 of Canada's best teachers (GM Sambuev and FMs Lefong Hua and Sylvain Barbeau).
It is planned to participate in a major tournament with the team (15 players), although details are still to come. Unfortunately, the CYCC is horribly expensive this year.

Most of the players that played in NY are also in Team-Quebec (including Maili-Jade and Shawn).

There is also a high school chess league in Montreal (a project launched by Marc Poulin a few years ago), that greatly contributed to encourage chess in high schools.

Great. Chess'n Math also have their prize for those who become masters. I like the higher-level teachers and friendship from being a team. Several members of the Quebec team did well in New York, maybe Diana Serban should also be a team member?

Yes, CMA used to give prize for promising players. However, I don't think this program still exists.
Unfortunately, Diana didn't qualify, although she is definitely a strong player for her age.
