  • Daniel F M Starbuck

I would surmise that Hans Jung might be familiar with the chess name, Daniel F M Starbuck, given the latter's cited prowess in blindfold chess. His 'Game of the Day' today at chessgames.com, entitled 'Coffeehouse Player', certainly gives validity to that moniker (:

Edward Winter provides some additional information on this Cincinnati chess player.

    Re: Daniel F M Starbuck

Chessgames.com is a great site and getting better now that it is filling in more games from the past. I fully support it and am a premium (life) member. Daniel Starbuck was a leading player from Cincinnati and a good blindfold player. But "the best blindfold player since Morphy in America" is a stretch. Any strong player can play one game of blindfold chess at a time and there is no evidence (yet) that Starbuck played multiple games of blindfold in a session. The frustrating thing about American chess history is there are still alot of questions to which there are no answers. (although alot of progress has been made in the last 5 years and hopefully much more to come) For example: Jackson Showalter (the Kentucky Lion) was born around the same time as Daniel Starbuck and was from Louisville Kentucky (the closest city to Cincinnati. Did they play? No evidence. Showalter's games in the database start in 1889 (Starbuck died in 1884). I for one would like to see some blindfold games of Jackson Showalter.
