  • Battle of Alberta: September 20th in Red Deer

The most important tournament of the year is coming up in Alberta. It's the annual Battle of Alberta, a team tournament between the North and the South.

The official team lists have been exchanged between the Captains, and the players can now start preparing for their opponents.

The Battle of Alberta is this Saturday, September 20th, starting at 10:30 AM.

    Location:
    Red Deer Lodge,
    4311 - 49th Avenue
    Red Deer,
    (800) 661-1657

It will be held in a conference room on the main floor.

Each Northern team member will play a two game match against the Southern player on the same board. Whichever team scores more points keeps the trophy (it looks like the Stanley Cup, but is more valuable and prestigious).

    Time control is G/90, + 30 seconds/move.

    NORTH -----------------------South

    1. IM Edward Porper 2476 Eric Hansen 2349

    2. Vladimir Pechenkin 2313 FM Greg Huber 2339

    3. Zhichao Li 2261 FM Dale Haessel 2300

    4. Nic Haynes 2220 Victor Kaminski 2294

    5. Rob Gardner 2218 Knut Neven 2268

    6. Micah Hughey 2198 Daniel Kazmaier 2236

    7. Vlad Rekhson 2195 Roy Yearwood 2152

    8. Andrew Boik 2184 Jose Luna 2124

    9. Sasa Grumic 2121 Thomas Kaminski 2070

    10. Anastasia Kazakevich 2117 Jim Daniluk 2024

    11. Brad Willis 2107 Hafiz Karmali 1968

    12. Sardul Purewal 2076 David Zhang 1918

If ratings are any indication, it looks like Edmonton (North) has more depth than Calgary (South). Is anyone taking wagers on this match :)

      It's not just ratings.
When you take into account our physical strength, good looks, hygiene, morals, ethics and general non-Calgarianosity, the Northern team comes out way ahead.

What are you willing to bet on the Northern Team, and who would be foolish enough to oppose you?

I think the South has a good chance to win again this year...

Just like last year. The north had the better team on paper, but the south won on the board :)

Hi ben. I think your prediction is pretty good. I might change Brad Willis vs. Hafiz Karmali to 1.5-.5 instead of 2-0. This would mean a tie... Does the South win in the event of a tie?

Yes Keith. If the event end up a tie, then the South keeps the trophy. GO SOUTH TEAM!!!:)

Hi Ben. I'm hurt that you and Keith think I'll only score .5/2 against Anastasia. Not only has she never beat me, but I beat both of you in Edmonton recently. Go South!!!

I actually have an evil backup plan involving "forgetting" to bring the Trophy to the event in Red Deer.

But Noam beat you, and Noam's my subject. WINNER.

Is that an "objective" quote from this year's Tournament Director???

Last time Anastasia played Jim, she was a smartass and played 1.f3 and 2.Kf2 (the Hammerschlag). It ended in a draw.

                            Luckily, I'm sure she's matured since then...yeah :/

What the F...! Vlad can't even get a tennis ball over the net. And he's never been a Master. How do you expect him to win his match over former Alberta Champion Roy Yearwood.

                              I mean... Go Vlad!
