  • Chess at Nuit Blanche

There will be chess at this year’s Nuit Blanche in Toronto -- the yearly celebration of art and creativity that runs from 6:51 pm at October 5, 2013 to sunrise the next morning. This year’s Nuit Blanche will feature over 500 contemporary art experiences and attract around a million visitors. Artist Blandford Gates created a 5-by-5-metre chessboard with movable pieces made from old farm machinery and kitchen utensils. The chess set and pieces made their debut last year where they were used to re-enact one of the games from Fischer and Spassky’s epic 1972 match. This year they will be used as a giant demonstration board for chess games played by volunteer chess players from sun down to sun up.

You can be part of the chess art exhibit at this year’s Nuit Blanche. The artist is looking for chess players willing to play chess games all night or in shifts that will be played on a regular sized board with their moves recreated by other volunteers on the giant board. If you’d like to be part of this event, please contact Blandford Gates at bgates@fgme.com.

Here are a couple of videos about this year’s Nuit Blanche featuring the artist talking about his chess art piece:
