  • Aurora CC - first season

Monday we gathered to have some fun the last time at the summer location - a first round-robin blitz tournament @ AuCC. Fourteen players came and rotated around the table. (This avoided pairing announcements, thus saved some time). Results at http://chess-results.com/tnr109599.a...4&lan=1&wi=821 I should mention young members - Colin and Dorian who fought eagerly and won quite number of games.
We might do once more the next year :)

This event concluded the club's first season. Graeme Knight (the president) summarized a path the club walked through the year.

    1) Early November saw the launch of the AuCC. The Mayor of Aurora opened the proceedings and we welcomed a good number of players in the first evening.

    2) November 19th saw our first club rated Rapid, with a whopping 30 players.

    3) We held our first simultaneous display with our very own NM Egis Zeromskis as a pre-Christmas treat! He swept up a great success by winning 100% of the games!

    4) Our first CFC-rated tournament was held in January. The six week Swiss saw 24 players battle for top spot. The amazing young Sergey Noritsyn took the title followed by Jerry Wasserman and Tom Bozinoski.

    5) A couple of weeks of club rated Rapids were played with the biggest attendance being 34 players.

    6) March 4th saw IM Bindi Cheng challenge 22 AuCC members to a simultaneous display. Despite pressure from NM Zeromskis simul success and a couple of beers and a large plate of ribs for dinner, IM Cheng cruised to easy victories in all games. William Hall put up a spectacular display by being the last man out. Fighting for the club and his reputation, he looked like he had IM Cheng under control... and then not!

    7) Our second CFC-rated tournament was held in April. The six week Swiss was attended by 33 players. NM Zeromskis won the tournament cleanly with only one draw. Egis was followed by William Hall, Mickey Stein, and (once again) Sergey.

    8) As we moved into the summer season the AuCC held it's first weekend tournament! This was the highlight of the year for many players. Attended by 7 Masters and 80 players across three sections, the weekend was deemed to be a great success. Cash prizes were won, rating points were gained and lost, and the AuCC weekend tournament committee proved that Aurora CAN be a center for chess in Canada! IM Nikolay Noritsyn took top spot in the Open Section, closely followed by the amazing Women's International Master, Yuanling Yuan. David Itkin came in third and our own NM Zeromskis romped home in fourth position. The U2000 Section saw great performances from Mickey Stein and Reza Nejadjavadipoor (5th and 6th) and friend of the AuCC, Carl Martin (4th). Mathanhe Kaneshalingam took second place in the U1600, followed closely in third by William Hall. All in all a great showing for AuCC members.

    9) Several of our junior members showed amazing performances in several competitions throughout the summer. A special congratulations goes to Sergey, Mathanhe, Alisher and Yuan Cheng for their results. I sincerely hope you can all join us again this year because you are truly an inspiration to all of us, young and old, and because it is wonderful to provide an environment where we may nurture and encourage your chess futures.

    10) Throughout the year Egis and Mickey worked together to bring the AuCC to Willowdale and the Annex Club to participate in Team Competitions with great success against all the odds (Radu drew against a near-Master, for example).

Our next meeting will be held at Aurora High School on September 9th! Once again we will be able to take up residence in a wonderful facility and I hope you will all be able to join us for the Fall and Winter season. A reminder - next Monday the club will be closed!

The Fall Open - our second weekend tournament - is planned for October 19/20. Despite a great deal of organization and effort that needs to be put into the event, we felt it appropriate to run another!
A new chess club, not a year old, running TWO CFC-rated weekend tournaments in its first year is really quite an achievement concluded Graeme :)
