  • Sergei Karjakin - serial killer

China and Russia (have played a second) match starting on the 28th July, named the Hei Xia Zi (Bolshoy Ussuriysky) Island Cup for the exotic venue on the Chinese/Russian Border
The format was something unseen in chess matches - the leading player of each team, Karjakin for Russia and Wei Yi for China, play a heads up match starting with one game at classic tempo then if that game is drawn, a two game blitz tie-break followed by one game armaggedon.
The winner of the first match (Karjakin) then goes on to play a similar match against the second player of the China team (Liren Ding). Only Ding went so far as the armaggedon game which Karjakin drew with the Black pieces.
Karjakin then went on to dispose of Hua Ni in one game followed by a win in the blitz against Yangyi Yu in match 4.
The format was introduced by the Chinese side which supplied a prize of $50,000 to the winning team plus $8,000 per match won. The idea is taken from Go (wei chi) competitions and was accepted by the time honoured 'golden rule' - them what bring the gold, make the rules.
It would not be correct to call this a simul by Karjakin as he played his opponents in sequence - hence the above heading. :D
