  • Cascla (K"+|Q-) or (<<'+|>>-): K. Spraggett vs Lautier, Correze (M-1) 1989

Cascla (K'+|Q-) or (<<'+|>>-): White castles first on the Kingside, Black castles Queenside, White wins.

In 1989, GM Kevin Spraggett was at the top of his game, with a narrow overtime loss to GM Artur Yusupov in round two of the Candidates matches, and a convincing three-peat triumph in the Canadian Zonal, Windsor 1989. Sixteen year old IM Joel Lautier, born in Toronto but representing France, to which he had moved in early childhood, had won the previous year's World Junior Championship. This six-game match of the generations, staged in the small town of Correze, wound up drawn, with each side winning once. Here is Kevin's win, a very deep tactical and positional game where the youngster looks like he is crashing through on the Kingside, but the clever veteran has it all figured out to defend! :)
