  • Another way to promote chess

Here's how: There's an internet site called meetup groups. So google them and enter meetups, your city, chess. You will find a listing of interested people who you can email individually (up to 12 per day). Unfortunately the posters there tend to be mostly beginners. But then you've got to start somewhere. You then send a very 'casual' invite and hope to have a few show up. These are your recruits.
As an example, here is an email I have been sending to Toronto interested parties >>>>
"We have a weekly chess tournament at Mom's Cafe, 1098 Danforth Av (1 block east of Donlands subway station). The tournaments are Saturdays 2pm and are recommended for players rated B Class or better. Usually several Masters take part and so the event is worthwhile for spectators. The event finishes about 4pm at which point anyone can join in friendly games for which there is no charge. So why not come by Saturday and see how you stand? You can call me on my cel at (647) 207-9342. --Vlad"

By the way, this can be used for any special interest group and I have had success with poker and backgammon.
