Re: Kovaliov playng in the World's Cup in Giorgia

I copied Larry Bevand's quote with some corrections of Anton's last name, as below:

"FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov expressed dissatisfaction with actions of Chairman of the organizing committee of the World Cup in Tbilisi and expressed his regret that such unpleasant situation has occurred.

Recall that Canadian chess player Anton Kovalyov left the World Cup without playing in the third round match. The reason for the demarche was the aggressive actions of the head of the organizing committee Zurab Azmaiparashvili, who insulted Kovalyov.

    - Kirsan Nikolayevich, Kovalyov played in shorts in the first two rounds. Was it possible that arbiters could not notice this during the game?
The organizers had to decide on the spot. I do not interfere in this matter. President of FIFA does not interfere in the work of arbiters during the game.

    - Do rules of FIDE stipulate how to dress?
Under the dress code, player should wear a suit. It is like an official event. It is recommended to play in suit or else they may come in underwear (laughs). This is usually stipulated in the contracts of chess players.

    - Did Kovalyov violate the rules of FIDE?
The situation is extremely unpleasant. Organizers should have told him about the way he was dressed before.

    - According to Kovalyov, Azmaiparashvili nearly attacked him...
It was ugly on the part of Zurab. Kovalev was offended at the way he was talked to. Sometimes words may hurt a lot. If I do not confuse anything, he has not received a fee for participating and winning the competition. He would have received a certain amount for two rounds. Zurab should not behave this way.

    - Will FIDE initiate proceedings on this issue?
Kovalev should write to the commission on ethics about this. Even football judges can be penalized for swearing. There were witnesses. The disciplinary body of our organization will consider this situation.

    - Was there something like this in the history of chess?
There were no such incidents, but there were times when chess players did not shake hands before the game. Later, it was decided that player must be considered as defeated for showing disrespect to his opponent.

    - What is your attitude to what happened?
    - I am upset that Zurab Azmaiparashvili lost his temper."

Anton is advertised as playing in the Varennes tournament near Montreal Thanksgiving weekend.

Anton has a chess scholarship to the University of Texas at Dallas, and he was wearing their chess team sweater to the World Cup. So I don't think he will retire soon.

I'm positive that the picture looks too much like Bozo the clown.

The issue is bullying by the chief organizer. Personally, I would favour requiring smart casual attire for our national championship---Nigel Short always set a classy example in that regard once he reached the top echelons. It is not a good advertisement for our sport to have players, even top players, dressed like slobs. It says all that needs to be said about the demographic we represent---not good.

Kudos to Ivanchuck, who showed up today with his jeans rolled up, exposing part of his calf, obviously in support of Anton. Would be nice to see Ivanchuck qualify.

I think Fischer once told Torre who came in with a t-shirt and jeans. To go change to a suit or he refused to play him.
Maybe the World event should have done like Ed Mirvish and if you went to Old Ed's you'd have to wear some outlandish tie because you forgot to wear one.
They could provide oversized Long pants to fit anyone.

What about this chess player (GM.V.Ivanchuk's photo), playing in the same tournament? Is he being treated the same way as Anton was?

Again, I think it needs some more explanation but...

-Yes, FIDE is a corrupt organization. With a bunch of corrupted individuals leading the show. The Olympics and the FIFA are the same.

-Just wear some pants and you'll have more of a point against them. A nice pair of pants will cost 100$. That's 1% of the 10k you're making to show up at the World Cup.
